The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system has reduced traffic congestion at toll plazas by about 50%, according to deputy works minister, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, Bernama reports.

“The ETC system has reduced congestion at toll plaza lanes by 30% to 50% and has helped consumers save time,” Rosnah told the Dewan Negara. Currently, toll transaction times have been reduced to six seconds for Touch ’n Go and three seconds for SmartTag as compared to 15 seconds for cash transactions.

She explained that toll plaza staff are on standby at each ETC lane to help out with any issues. This she said, ensures smooth flow at toll booths during peak hours specifically from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm.

As of April 1, a total of 51 out of 177 toll plazas nationwide have implemented the ETC method. “Electronic Toll Collection use at all highway toll plazas too have increased from 65% to 81%,” Rosnah disclosed.

Elsewhere, Rosnah noted that approximately 1.2 million vehicles travel on the North-South Expressway (PLUS), as the roads are always kept in good condition. She explained that performance-based road maintenance ensures that roads are maintained according to schedule as outlined in the concession agreement.
