The Audi A8 range could grow to include additional body styles, according to a report by Auto Express. Currently, the A8 is offered with a standard and long wheelbase only, which is shy of that offered by Audi’s rival, Mercedes-Benz and its S-Class.

Speaking to the British publication, Dr Stefan Knirsch, technical director at Audi said the company is discussing on the possibility of introducing more derivatives of the A8, which includes an even longer wheelbase and a two-door coupe version.

Should Audi decide to make the former, it will have the experience gained from building the recently-introduced Audi A8 L extended, a one-off project made on the request of a European customer that measures 6,360 mm long (close to the Maybach Pullman’s 6,499 length).

“The success of the extra-long version of the S-Class has got us wondering about whether there could be a business case for that in the future,” he said. Currently, the S-Class range includes a short wheelbase W222 sedan, long wheelbase V222 sedan, even longer wheelbase X222 Maybach and extra-long wheelbase VV222 Pullman. There are also the two-door C217 Coupe and R217 Cabriolet.

We’ll have to wait and see just how many variants Audi decides to build. The next-generation A8 won’t be due until 2017, and will debut with Level 3 autonomous technology, whereby the car is capable of navigating itself without human intervention, but will still require the driver to be alert to take over if needed.
