“Doesn’t Kia already have a B-segment crossover?” you’re no doubt asking, looking at the headline. In fact, the South Korean carmaker already sells two such SUVs – the first being the China-only KX3, the other taking the form of the Niro hybrid. But, difficult as it is to believe, Kia is working on a third car to be sold in the same segment, as these spyshots show.

Aimed at rivals such as the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Renault Captur and the like, this is likely the global version of the KX3 – expected to be offered for those who are not interested in a hybrid-only model like the Niro – and although not much information is available, it will likely be based on the next-generation Rio.

The styling appears to be more avant-garde than the handsome KX3, with the main headlight unit separated from the “eyebrow” LED indicator/daytime running light strips, much like the Citroen C4 Picasso/Cactus or Jeep Cherokee. In profile, the car appears to have a more low-slung look that more closely resembles the Niro.

In terms of powertrain options, the unnamed crossover will likely mirror the KX3, these being two 1.6 litre engines. The naturally-aspirated unit makes 123 hp and 151 Nm, while a turbocharged T-GDI version makes 200 hp and 264 Nm. Expect a 1.7 litre CRDi turbodiesel to be offered as well.

Kia’s global compact SUV can be expected to reach markets late next year, when it will give compact segment buyers a taller-riding alternative to the Soul hatchback.
