Toyota Motor Europe will be producing a hybrid transaxle at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) in Walbrzych, as well as two petrol engines at Toyota Motor Industries, Poland (TMIP) in Jelcz-Laskowice. Production of the hybrid transaxle will begin in 2018, with the new 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre engines planned for 2017 and 2019 respectively.
Toyota’s total investment to-date now comes to 950 million euros since operations commenced in the country in 2002, following an additional investment of 150 million euros for the introduction of the new powertrain projects.
The new hybrid transaxle will be part of Toyota’s hybrid powertrain, with the transaxle mated to the 1.8 litre ZR engine, to powers the likes of the Auris and Auris Touring Sports Hybrid for the European market, as well as for the upcoming C-HR when the crossover starts production at the end of the year.
Currently, the hybrid transaxle for the Auris is manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan and exported to Europe. Additional research and development functions for materials testing will commence at TMMP to “support the localisation of hybrid transaxle parts”, according to Toyota.
The TMIP plant which is set to manufacture the new 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre petrol engines, currently produces 1.4 and 2.2 litre diesel engines. “Although TMIP is currently manufacturing only diesel engines, the European market is moving towards an increased share of petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles.
“It was therefore important for us to diversify our output and develop our petrol engine manufacturing skills, which will help secure our future,” said Kazunori Masuoka, President of Toyota Motor Industries Poland. TMMP currently produces the the 1.4 litre for the Yaris built in France, the UK-built Auris, as well as the Corolla produced in Turkey and South Africa.
