2018 Ford Mustang facelift – now, the soft-top’s turn

Following the debut of the fastback version of the 2018 Ford Mustang facelift, the Blue Oval has announced the mid-cycle action (MCA) convertible variant of the sixth-gen S550. The soft-top pony gets virtually the same revisions as seen on the coupe.

The refresh brings along a new grille and bonnet as well as restyled front fenders. Also on, all-LED front lighting (projector main units, turn signal and foglamps). At the back, there’s a new tri-bar LED tail lamp design and new bumper, and though there’s no photo of the rear, the topless Mustang should have the same exhaust tip confuguration as the hard top, with dual tips for the EcoBoost and quad tips for the GT as standard.

Like the coupe, the convertible also gets three new colour choices (Orange Fury tri-coat metallic, Royal Crimson tinted clear coat and Kona Blue), and the 12 wheel design options available for the fixed top version.

Inside, the Mustang now features improved materials and trim as well as restyled seats, which come with new pattern and colour options. New kit includes a 12-inch digital LCD instrument cluster display and Ford Sync Connect with FordPass, the latter allowing drivers to start, lock, unlock and locate their car via their smartphone through an app.

There’s also a MyMode memory function, which remembers a driver’s driving preferences, while the safety front adds on new driver-assist features such as Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection into the equation.

Like the coupe, two engine options abound, but revisions have been made to the 2.3 litre EcoBoost and 5.0 litre Coyote V8, resulting in output gains. On the EcoBoost, there’s a bump up in torque, while the Coyote gets both a power and torque hike, courtesy of a new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection configuration.

Transmission choices are either a new 10R80 10-speed automatic or a Getrag MT82 six-speed manual, which has been upgraded to offer better torque characteristics on both 2.3 and 5.0 litre applications.

The convertible also gets a new MagneRide damping system as an option, available as part of the Mustang Performance Package. Also available, an all-new active valve exhaust system for the 5.0 litre GT.
