Remember the Volkswagen Taigun? The entry-level SUV that was reportedly canned last year? Well, Wolfsburg must have thought its demise was premature, as development has been restarted on course for a 2020 market introduction, according to AutoBild.
The project was initially shelved, the German publication reported, because it would have simply been too expensive to build – the up! city car, on which the Taigun was supposed to be based, shares few components with other models in Volkswagen’s stable.
However, the price premiums SUVs typically command, as well as the fact that production would be located at the Bratislava plant in Slovakia have made the car easier to justify. Volkswagen is also eager to put a small SUV to market, especially in Brazil – which is dominated by the Dacia Duster and Ford EcoSport.
The resulting car won’t be called Taigun, said AutoBild, but will instead gain the T-Track moniker, following in the footsteps of the upcoming T-Roc and T-Cross siblings. Compared to the cross up!, it will feature a higher ground clearance, larger wheels and more distinct styling, but it won’t have a completely new body as that would be too expensive – even with Skoda and Seat versions to help offset the cost.
Pricing is targeted at €15,000, and AutoBild stated that this is inclusive of the most important safety features, but without all-wheel drive. The T-Track is also reportedly able to be converted into an electric vehicle or as a city delivery van if needed.
