Toyota races to SEMA with 600 hp C-HR, tuned Camrys

This is the Toyota C-HR R-Tuned, which is one of the displays at Toyota’s booth for this year’s SEMA Show. According to the people who made it (DG-Spec), the souped-up C-HR will set quicker lap times than a McLaren 650S Spider, Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Nissan GT-R Nismo at Willow Springs International Raceway.

How is that possible? Well, under the bonnet, the C-HR R-Tuned packs a 2AZ-FE 2.4 litre four-cylinder engine that features forged internals, reinforced valvetrain and a custom DG-Spec Garrett turbocharger system. Paired to the uprated powerplant is a five-speed manual transmission.

When boosted to 23 psi, the engine churns out around 600 hp, good enough for a 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) sprint time of 2.9 seconds. To ensure it can do more than go fast in a straight line, the C-HR also receives Brembo brakes, 275/35 Toyo Proxes tyres and adjustable DG-Spec Motion Control Suspension (MCS) dampers, and functional aerodynamics that produce 136 kg of downforce at speed.

Those extra parts allow it to generate up to 1.2 g of braking force as well as 1.7 g of lateral acceleration. When clocked on the track, the C-HR R-Tuned managed a time of 1:25.22, which places it just behind the Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 (1:25.17), C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (1:25.00), McLaren 675LT (1:24.29), Porsche 918 Spyder (1:23.54) and the top-pegged Dodge Viper ACR (1:21.24).

Aside from the beastly C-HR, Toyota also had several top NASCAR drivers – Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Daniel Suarez – have a go at modifying the all-new 2018 Camry. Not wanting to be left out is Rutledge Wood, with the former Top Gear USA host having a go at making his own unique Camry as well.

Other displays include the C-HR Beat Box, NASCAR Camry pace car and several generations of the Camry from the first-generation to the latest one.
