Toyota C-HR R-Tuned could target FWD ‘Ring record

The company behind the Toyota C-HR R-Tuned – a race-spec version of the crossover – could try for a new front wheel-drive lap record at the Nurburgring. The bespoke C-HR made its debut at this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, and is apparently quite quick around Willow Springs International Raceway (video proof below).

In a report by Autocar UK, Dan Gardner of Dan Gardner Spec (DG-Spec) said, “the car was built for SEMA and Toyota has no plans for it from now on. But it’s the real deal. Personally, it would be a dream to take it to the Nordschleife. I have no doubt it could set the front-wheel-drive record there.”

“The Toyota NGA platform the C-HR is built on is really stiff, so we worked on developing the handling characteristics,” he said. “We wanted to make a supercar killer – the whole point is that it doesn’t make sens,” he added.

Currently, the title of “FWD King of the ‘Ring” is being held by the Honda Civic Type R with a time of 7 minutes 43.80 seconds. Unlike the C-HR R-Tuned, the Honda hatchback is actually available for purchase, and can be used on public roads.

Nonetheless, it’ll be interesting to see a 600 hp crossover charging down the one of the world’s most famous tracks. As a refresher, the C-HR R-Tuned packs a turbocharged 2AZ-FE 2.4 litre four-cylinder engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. It’ll do the 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) sprint in just 2.9 seconds, and has plenty of other kit to make sure it corners well.

Highlights include Brembo brakes, 275/35 Toyo Proxes tyres and adjustable DG-Spec Motion Control Suspension (MCS) dampers, and functional aerodynamics that produce 136 kg of downforce at speed.

Race spec car will definitely beat (road) production car. Is this how the big T want the title?

Of course to those fan boys that don’t care, any win is a win.
