Toyota FT-AC debuts at 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show

Just as teased earlier last month, Toyota has unveiled its FT-AC adventure vehicle concept at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. As expected with an SUV or crossover-type vehicle, the words ‘active’ and ‘lifestyle’ surface, complete with rugged looks, though here the FT-AC also adds cameras which can record one’s adventure with the vehicle.

Its side mirrors have embedded (and removable) cameras, with infrared functionality to enable video recording in poor light or night scenes. These are augmented by front LED marker lights which can also serve as a flash for taking photos. An integrated WiFi hotspot can automatically upload the recorded footage to the cloud, allowing real-time editing and publishing via mobile devices.

The WiFi capability also enables the FT-AC’s users to livestream footage of their surroundings and adventures to their audience. Additionally, the FT-AC’s rear-facing, roof rack-mounted LEDs can also be controlled via a mobile device. Also around the rear of the vehicle is an integrated, retractable bike rack which can be deployed or hidden in seconds.

Though currently devoid of dimensions or specifications, the FT-AC was designed around a long wheelbase and wide tracks, Toyota says. Beefy all-terrain tyres are mounted on 20-inch wheels, while short overhangs and generous ground clearance enable the driver to tackle a wider scope of terrain.

Skid plates underneath the FT-AC’s front and rear offer protection against rocks and ruts, and tow hooks in the event it does get snagged on adverse terrain. There are also LED headlights and fog lights – the latter can be removed and attached on a bicycle for night rides.

Under the hood, the FT-AC features a petrol-fed engine and an all-wheel driveline with advanced torque vectoring enabling drive to be routed to the appropriate wheels. Variable terrain response manages traction control and throttle response in orde to maximise grip at each wheel, the company added.

Hybrid drive is on the cards for a future iteration of the FT-AC, says Toyota, which aims to combine its off-road prowess and versatility with improved fuel consumption and emissions.
