Not content with just the Nürburgring Nordschleife front-wheel drive production lap record it set last year, Honda is looking to amplify the FK8 Type R‘s credentials and class-leading status with a series of time attack challenges on a number of iconic European race circuits.
The idea behind the ‘Type R Time Attack 2018’ is to set new front-wheel drive benchmarks on these racetracks, the challenge looking to be very much to help advertise the car and its upcoming participation in the 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). The car that will take on the challenge, the 2018 Time Attack Civic Type R, will be shown in Geneva next week.
A squad of racing stars will help the automaker achieve its aim, and former Formula 1 world champion and current NSX Super GT driver Jenson Button will be one of the assembled cast. The complete driver line-up hasn’t been finalised, but World Touring Car Cup drivers Tiago Monteiro (Portugal), Esteban Guerrieri (Argentina) and NSX Super GT driver Bertrand Baguette (Belgium) are also on for the challenge.
A similar challenge in 2016 saw benchmark lap times set at Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, Monza, Estoril and Hungaroring using the previous-generation Civic Type R, piloted by various BTCC and WTCC drivers. For the 2018 edition, Honda will aim to exceed the times that were set at Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps and Estoril in 2016, with further tracks to be announced at a later date.

First of all, this is not about who’s got the best creature comforts, tech gizmos stuffs like that. You can count on German marques for that. This is about who’s the fastest round the race track. I foresee the closest challenger to the Civic Type R will be the upcoming Renault Megane RS.
