Mahindra & Mahindra has announced the debut of Automobili Pininfarina, which is set to enter the luxury electric vehicle market. The company, which will be based in Europe, will be launching its first model, a Pininfarina-badged electric hypercar in 2020.
The introduction of the new brand follows on the acquisition of the Italian auto styling house and engineering company by Mahindra in December 2015. According to Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, the new company is set to leverage Pininfarina’s automotive design expertise and develop a rare collector’s item that only a handful of connoisseurs will ever own.
No details about the new hypercar, which according to rumours will be called the PF-Zero, but it’s expected that the vehicle will feature powertrain technology from Mahindra and utilise EV expertise from its participation in Formula E racing.
Since its sale to Mahindra, the Italian design house has been keeping busy, working with Hong Kong-based Hybrid Kinetic Group on a number of vehicle designs. The first was the H600, seen in Geneva last year, and two more concepts are due to be introduced soon – the H500 and K350 studies will be making their debut at the Beijing Motor Show later this month.
It has also been appointed by Vietnam’s national automaker Vinfast to develop the nation’s first sedan and SUV models, with the launch of its first car planned for September next year.
