Toyota Supra to get 2.0 litre inline-four engine – report

It’s perhaps only natural that the forthcoming A90 Toyota Supra was confirmed to use turbocharged straight-six power, albeit courtesy of BMW in the form of the B58B30 engine producing 340 PS. However, a Road & Track report finds that the iconic nameplate will also gain a 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine base option, also from BMW, thanks to a document from transmission and components maker ZF.

The B48B20 2.0 litre inline-four will be paired with the same 8HP51HIS eight-speed automatic that will mate with the 3.0 litre turbo six, though the more modest powerplant will output 265 PS according to the leaked document. The document also reveals that the next BMW Z4 – co-developed with the Supra – will gain an additional 3.0 litre six-cylinder variant which produces 381 PS.

Speaking to the website at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada confirmed that the four-cylinder version will join the line-up, adding that it will be lighter than the six-cylinder version and offer a sharper-feeling turn-in thanks to “much better weight distribution.” For those who are planning to do a 2JZ engine swap, “please buy the four-cylinder. It will be much cheaper,” he said.

A closer look at the car by the website adds that the brake setup appears to use front and rear calipers identical to those on the G30 BMW 5 Series, which use the same B48 2.0 litre and B58 3.0 litre engines expected in the Supra. What would you choose, dear readers? Six-cylinder grunt, or four-cylinder agility?
