In May 2016, Ashrita Furman managed to burst a total of 63 balloons in one minute using a focusable 2W 450 nm blue laser, which was enough for the American national to earn a spot in the Guinness World Records. Now, a BMW M2 Competition has managed to beat that record by popping 79 balloons within the same amount of time, and here’s a video of the attempt.
Armed with a laser mounted on its double kidney grille, the M2 Competition went on its mission to eliminate the balloons that were arranged in the form of BMW M’s logo. This meant that the driver had to harness all of the coupe’s dynamic characteristics and handling.
Thankfully, the M2 Competition comes with a few upgrades over a regular M2 like a new carbon-fibre under-bonnet brace taken from the M3 and M4 in order to increase rigidity. The Dynamic Stability Control has also been recalibrated to allow for more delicate control, improving wet weather traction and reducing traction interruption during drifting.
That last bit is important as the S55 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six engine was busy dishing out all of its 410 PS and 550 Nm – 40 PS and 85 Nm more than the standard car. Buyers here will get to choose between a six-speed manual or seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic.
So, aside from being the darling of the many people that has driven one, owners can also boast that their M2 Competition is now a record beater as well. At least until some other carmaker wants to have a go themselves.

I thought BMW dropped the standard M2 from the lineup already. From now on, there is only one trim available: M2 Competition.
