Hyundai i40 updated with new grille, engines, tech

Hyundai has given the i40 an update, with the both sedan and wagon body styles benefitting from a slightly updated design, expanded engine line-up and revised kit list.

On the exterior, the i40 now adopts the brand’s Cascading Grille that is already present on many of Hyundai’s recent introductions. There’s also an option for 18-inch wheels now, which joins the existing 16- and 17-inch set from the outgoing model.

The interior, like the exterior, remains largely unchanged, although there are two new interior colours – Merlot Red and Grey/Black – joining Black and Beige. Leather upholstery is available in all four colours, with Black and Beige also offered in cloth.

Depending on the appointed seat colour, there will be a contrasting in lay on the door panel, while metal mesh trim is present on the dashboard in combination with the Merlot Red and Grey interiors.

While the styling changes aren’t very comprehensive, the i40 does benefit from Hyundai SmartSense, which includes the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system. It operates by alerting drivers in emergency situations and applies the brakes automatically if required. The system activates when a vehicle is detected in front of the car at speeds of 10 km/h or above.

Under the bonnet, a new Euro 6d TEMP-compliant diesel engine has been introduced. The Smartstream 1.6 litre unit comes in two power outputs – 115 PS/280 Nm and 136 PS/320 Nm – and comes paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The higher output engine is also offered with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, plus a 1.6 litre petrol engine with 135 PS is also available with a six-speed box.
