Audi adds GLOSA to Traffic Light Information system

To help reduce the number of stops at red lights, Audi of America has expanded functionality of its Traffic Light Information (TLI) – a Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technology – to include Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA).

Available for select 2017 model year and newer Audi models, GLOSA uses traffic signal information (obtained via V2I technology) and the current position of a vehicle to provide speed recommendations intended to allow drivers to pass traffic lights during a green interval.

Parameters that are taken into consideration to enable this include the distance to a traffic light, the speed limit profile for the area and the signal timing plans. The last item mentioned uses on-board 4G LTE data connectivity to obtained real-time signal information from the traffic management system, letting the driver know approximately how much time remains before the light changes.

The data is then used to calculate the recommended speed the driver should follow. Currently, more than 4,700 intersections across the United States support the “time-to-green” and GLOSA functionalities, including in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas and Las Vegas, among others.

“Audi is committed to moving America in many ways, including through the development of industry-leading connectivity and mobility solutions. Not only do vehicle-to-infrastructure technologies like GLOSA benefit drivers today, they’re also the critical steps needed as we continue toward an automated future,” said Mark Del Rosso, president of Audi of America.

Won’t work in Malaysia. Our traffic lights do not sync in sequential order. One traffic light is Green, after you driver few meters away, the next one is Red, to give you another 3-5 minutes to curse the stupidity of road traffic planners.
