2019 Kia Optima EX displayed at Malaysia Autoshow

Last month, Naza Kia Malaysia announced the new Kia Optima EX, which sits below the range-topping GT. At RM139,888 on-the-road without insurance, the EX – which is on display at the 2019 Malaysia Autoshow – is a full RM30,000 cheaper than the GT.

For that, you won’t get the GT’s 2.0 litre turbo engine, but a naturally aspirated motor of the same size. Paired to a six-speed torque converter automatic, the EX’s CVVL engine puts out 163 PS and 196 Nm of torque. That’s a fair bit less than the GT’s boosted output – 82 PS and 154 Nm less to be exact.

It’s easy to tell the EX from the GT. The entry variant wears a distinctive “vertical intaglio grille”, a slightly different twin projector LED headlight design, as well as a lower intake with horizontal bars instead of the GT’s mesh. The handsome D-segment sedan also comes with LED combination tail lights and 17-inch multispoke alloys (an inch smaller than the GT).

Inside, the Optima EX is equipped with a powered driver’s seat with memory function, black fabric seats, electric parking brake, smart key with push-start button, and a seven-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functions. It also comes with a 360-degree Around View Monitor, a feature that’s new to the Optima EX.

There are three colour options – Aurora Black, Snow White Pearl and this car’s Platinum Graphite.

There are rumors circulating on the net that naza systematically faked the import invoices to pay less tax. This would explain the low prices naza able to sell their kia and peugeot cars.

But why copy XC90 hollow bar grille design? Their foreign desingers ran out of ideas?

Volvo was not the first one with such grill designs. Not everything in the world revolves around Volvo, Geely or Proton.

P.S why did Proton copy the Subaru Forester’s grill?

Wow, what a beautiful car. So advanced. Kia has really come a long way. They work hard and today, they produce top selling vehicles. In 90s, Kia was far behind Proton!

Their first car was produced in 1974, just 10 years before Proton and yet, they can sell 8 million cars globally per annum.

    Hard work really pays!

Yes. One of their biggest supporter is Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.

Back in 2000. Our Mitsubishi based Waja and Perdana V6 were mechanically and dynamically way more advanced, than their Kia Spectra and Optima. The local DRB Proton mgmt simply epic failed big time …Huge shame.

    • Hyundai, Kia’s parent company used Mitsubishi’s engines in their earliest cars. Today, Hyundai is a giant while Mitsubishi almost bankrupt not once, but twice. Existing longer doesn’t guarantee success, troll.

    • Come on! A simple search will tell us KIA have been in existence since 74 years ago. That tells me Proton can’t easily be 64 years old as you implied. Why do you bother lying to us here?

It is game of spot the differences between the 2014 model and 2019 model. No idea why Naza bother to launch a face-lift 2014 model in 2019. Just waste of time and the car is likely driven by showroom managers and after 1 year sold at 20% or 30% discount.
