Merc-AMG A35 – Maro Engel drives with Nicol David

Mercedes-AMG is no stranger to success in competition. Having won five Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship titles since 2014 and holding the points lead in the ongoing 2019 Formula 1 season with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport team, the German marque also enjoys success in sports car racing.

Mercedes-AMG factory racing driver Maro Engel competed in the Blancpain GT World Challenge and has previously won the Nurburgring 24 Hours and the Macau GT Cup, and won races in the FIA GT World Cup and the DTM series. Meanwhile, Malaysian professional squash player and sporting icon Datuk Nicol David has eight world titles and held the Number 1 world ranking for 108 consecutive months from August 2006.

In this edition of Need A Ride, Engel drives with David in Amsterdam as the duo head to Squash City in a Mercedes-AMG A35 4Matic, though not before stopping at De Hallen for a bite.

Engel asks David a question likely posed by anyone aspiring to success – what would your tips be for becoming the best at what you love doing? “Learning from your mistakes, and when you are at your lowest (point), you actually learn more from those moments than when you are at your highest,” David said.

“I don’t actually think about winning because I always want to win, but I focus on the performance. To be at the top, you have to find the motivation to push yourself further and further, putting your heart and soul into it,” she added.

As it turns out, David likes to apply precision footwork, even in her downtime; taking dance classes is her choice of recreation, which helps her feel more free and relaxed on the court. “And after that, I can eat again,” David laughs, as though to confirm what is surely a Malaysian favourite – eating.
