QUICK LOOK: C118 Mercedes-AMG CLA45S 4Matic+

Some things in life don’t make sense, but good to have around nonetheless. The C118 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4Matic range is one of those things, and for the first time ever, a hotter CLA 45 S 4Matic+ variant can be had as well.

The numbers are preposterous. Power comes from a boosted M139 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine, making up to 421 PS and 500 Nm of torque in the range-topping 45 S, enabling a century sprint of 4.0 seconds. The previous CLA 45 4Matic+ facelift made 381 PS and 475 Nm of torque, and sprints from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. Top speed for the new C118 model is 250 km/h, or 270 km/h with the AMG Driver’s Package.

Standard here is an eight-speed AMG Speedshift DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic+ fully-variable AWD system, the latter featuring AMG Torque Control to go with the rear axle differential. This enables powersliding in Drift Mode – again, it doesn’t make sense, but good to have all the same.

This model was on display at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, and it’s decked out with the matte grey paint, huge 19-inch wheels, aerodynamic package, as well as a range of creature comforts offered on modern Mercedes-Benz compact cars. Find out more in our walk-around video of the beast, above.
