SEMA 2019: Volkswagen readies four sexy concepts

With the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) 2019 show just around the corner, Volkswagen Group of America will be displaying a total of four custom built cars to showcase the “versatility and appeal” of its cars.

Let’s kick things off with the Atlas Basecamp Concept. This car has been given a matte Platinum Grey paint, contrasted with red and black accents. Accessories include a custom body kit by Air Design USA, Front Runner Slimline II roof rack system with bike holders, off-road LED light bars on the front and rear, and protective interior add-ons from Volkswagen Accessories.

Mechanically, it runs on the factory 3.6 litre VR6 petrol engine making 276 hp, married to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Drive is sent to all four wheels via the automaker’s 4Motion AWD system, with Drive Mode Selection available as well.

Upgrades here include an H&R Adventure Line coilover suspension system that increases ride height by approximately 38 mm, and it sits on 17-inch fifteen52 Traverse MX Concept wheels wrapped with 265/70 all-terrain tyres.

Next is the Atlas Adventure Concept created by Volkswagen Innovation and Engineering Centre California. This one gets a custom vinyl wrap with graphics and LED lighting equipment for a more off-road look, and completing the package is a fold-over rooftop tent and Thule awning system.

It also gets a coilover suspension by H&R Adventure Line which raises ride height, and there’s beefy Yokohama tyres that fill the flared fender arches. Unique to this concept is an onboard DJI Mavic drone and a REVL action camera that’s mounted on the exterior. These video cameras automatically capture, edit, and store the car’s journey.

The third Atlas concept was developed by Thule, and it’s created to be “elegant enough for a metropolitan lifestyle, but equipped for outdoor adventures.” Equipment includes huge 20-inch satin black CV10 wheels by Vossen, blacked-out trim and gloss black-wrapped roof. Of course, it gets Thule Wingbar Evo roof rack, a sizeable 8.5-inch awning system by HideAway, a T2 Pro XT hitch bike rack, Baja Design LED lights, and a Tepui Autana 4 rooftop tent.

Finally, the last car is the Jetta GLI by H&R Special Springs. As implied in the company name, this Jetta gets upgraded H&R Street Performance Coilovers, H&R Sport Sway Bars, and H&R TRAK+ wheel spacers. It sits on huge 20-inch Rotiform RSE wheels in an anthracite finish, complimenting the factory Pure Grey paint. Additional flair is delivered by Sticky Jewel graphics and a number of interior Volkswagen Accessories.

To recap, the Jetta GLI gets the Golf GTI’s 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 228 hp and 350 Nm of torque, and comes with a six-speed manual as standard. A seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission can be had as well. Other mechanical bits include the Mk 7.5 Golf GTI’s VAQ electronically controlled, torque sensing limited-slip differential.
