VIDEO: MINI Cooper SE stars in “The E-talian Job”

MINI has gone quiet. Like literally. The new Cooper SE is the automaker’s first ever full electric car, and to celebrate its upcoming market launch (it’s set to go on sale in Q2 2020), MINI introduced a short video clip called to illustrate the benefits of emissions-free mobility.

Cheekily titled “The E-talian Job,” the “Getaway Car” that is the Cooper SE is seen zipping around in the northern Italian metropolis of Turin, escaping the unnerving rush hour traffic by making a detour through narrow side streets, leading him directly to the roof of the Lingotto building. It was once the largest production site of an Italian automobile manufacturer, which includes a test track on the roof that was laid out as a circuit and is about one kilometre long.

Today, the Lingotto building is home to a shopping centre and hotels. The test track on the roof, however, remained intact even after the conversion. It’s here that the Cooper SE meets a red classic Mini Cooper making its rounds on the historic track, a scene plucked straight from the 1969 movie classic “The Italian Job”. See what they’ve done there?

To quickly recap, the Cooper SE features an electric motor that outputs 181 hp (135 kW) and 270 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels. The 0-60 km/h sprint is done in 3.9 seconds, whereas the 0-100 km/h is done in 7.3 seconds. In true city car fashion, the top speed is capped at 150 km/h, and a full charge (32.6 kWh lithium-ion battery) yields up to 270 km of range, based on WLTP standards.

An 11 kW onboard AC charger with a Type 2 connection is standard, though a 22 kW three-phase MINI Electric Wallbox for homes can be optioned. This charges the Cooper SE from flat to 80% in 2.5 hours, and to 100% in 3.5 hours. For DC charging, it supports up to 50 kW via a CCS Combo 2 connection, requiring just 35 minutes to get an 80% charge.

For equipment, it gets a number of electric-specific treatments such as the bright yellow highlights, as well as LED headlights, dual-zone climate control with pre-conditioning via the MINI Connected Remote App, the Connected Navigation Plus with an 8.8-inch screen and wireless smartphone charging, plus a range of interior options – Interior Style MINI Dark, Interior Style MINI Light and Interior Style MINI Yours.
