GWM Ora Good Cat EV launching in Thailand in Oct

Great Wall Motors (GWM) will be launching the Ora Good Cat electric car in Thailand next month. According to Headlightmag, the cute EV will be a CBU import from China. By the way, GWM has made Thailand its regional base after taking over GM’s Rayong factory when the Americans left ASEAN. The plant, which started operations a few months ago, currently makes the Haval H6 SUV.

While Haval is GWM’s SUV sub brand, Ora is the Chinese carmaker’s EV brand. The Good Cat (directly translated from the car’s Chinese name, hao mao) surfaced late last year in its domestic market and was previewed in Thailand in February this year.

Underpinned by GWM’s modular Lemon platform that the Haval H6 also uses, the Good Cat is a five-door hatchback that measures 4,235 mm long and 1,825 mm wide, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase. Compared to a Proton X50, the Ora is 95 mm shorter and 25 mm wider, and its wheelbase is 50 mm longer – cuddly looking it may be, but this is not a tiny cat.

There are two battery capacities – 47.8 kWh and 59.1 kWh – offering 401 km and 501 km of claimed range, respectively. Standard AC charging takes eight hours, while DC fast charging from 30% to 80% levels can be done in 30 minutes, GWM says. A single-motor sends 145 PS and 210 Nm of torque to the front wheels. The 0-50 km/h sprint time in this 1,510 kg car is 3.8 seconds, while top speed is 150 km/h.

Like many new cars, the Good Cat comes with semi autonomous driving features. Ora Pilot Driving includes adaptive cruise control, automated throttle control and intelligent curve assist. A Wisdom Dodge function steers the cat away from large vehicles in adjacent lanes whilst remaining in its own lane.

Ora Pilot Safety includes front collision warning with AEB, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, rear collision warning and rear cross traffic alert.

Meanwhile, Ora Pilot Parking is an autonomous parking function which includes AI point-to-point memory parking. The car learns and remembers routes to parking spaces with satellite navigation and ultrasonic radar, and when the driver is near a location previously stored in the car’s memory, the memory parking function enables the car to find a space and park itself.

No Thai pricing yet, but in China, the Ora Good Cat is priced from 103,900 yuan (RM66,853) to 143,900 yuan (RM92,590). GWM has stated plans to make Thailand its regional hub for EVs, so perhaps the Good Cat would be locally assembled in the future.

By the way, this electric cat has been spotted roaming in Malaysia as well, although it’s unclear why, or who is behind it. What do you think of this cute EV?

This is what we want. Hopefully Malaysian govt or MITI don’t do something funny with the pricing.

It won’t need MITI to fail it, the pricing itself will ensure it won’t take off in our market. Trying convincing typical Malaysian buyers to pay Rm90k for a Myvi sized car with low RV later on.

  • So cute, it has the dashboard that Premium Genesis GV60 EV copied, or vice versa.

They expect people to contractually sign up for the pre launch offer without knowing price.
