The next-generation Toyota Fortuner will feature a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain when it debuts in Thailand next year, according to sources for Thai publication Headlight Magazine.
According to the magazine’s source, the forthcoming full-model change for the Fortuner will adopt the TNGA-F architecture, and the mild-hybrid diesel powertrain that it accommodates will make for a model that will be the first for an SUV in Thailand, as well as becoming the first such model from Toyota.
Specifically, it is the 1GD family of diesel engines that will gain mild-hybrid electrification, noted Headlight Magazine. In addition to providing momentary drive assistance when setting off from a standstill, this will also supply power to the air-conditioning in order to reduce fuel consumption. In the current-generation Fortuner, the 1GD-FTV 2.8 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel outputs 204 PS and 500 Nm of torque.
When the next-generation Toyota Fortuner debuts next year with the mild-hybrid diesel powertrain, this variant is expected to priced lower than the Thai-market Fortuner Legender, suggests Headlight Magazine.
The development of diesel-hybrid powertrains at Toyota have been the subject of rumours since August last year, when Japanese publication Best Car Web wrote that the powertrain type is expected to see service in “off-road 4WD vehicles” and commercial vehicle-based models.
The earlier report by the Japanese publication noted that Japanese-market models without hybrid powertrains include the Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado, Hiace Wagon, GranAce and more, and these have been said to incorporate hybrid engines displacing 2.5 litres and 3.5 litres.

Because this car uses original diesel engine but with mild hybrid together with diesel engine might give cheaper than this.
Thought Toyota would pair the hybrid on-top of “diesel-turbo” like the E300 BlueTec hybrid. Normal diesel dgn hybrid pulak?

2.0turbo good enough! no need to pay for high roadtax!
Workhorse is a workhorse.
Pay more for smoother productivity, while maneuvering at the rough road.
And it needs to be resilient, durable.
Current Toyota 2.8L 204PS, 500Nm is a Great Beast.
There is no news for 2.0 turbo for next generation fortuner. Price for road tax between 2.0 turbo and 2.8 turbo is not really huge difference. Road tax price for 2.8 turbo is not expensive
And still no Toyota Safety Sense at least from 2.0? No Lane Centering means it is from the older TSS versions.
Toyota, only for die hard fans that never aware world is changing. Their mind still remain at 20years ago. But Malaysian mind is changing, that’s Honda sales has overtaken Toyota for many years. You can see more City, Civic, Accord (now D segment no more popular) against Vios, Altis and Camry.
Sure? But Toyota sales is still leading over honda overall
Ditch the chip shortage and toyota has better sales than honda in malaysia
Next gen Fortuner will come with that as TSS 2.0
King Sampan riding experience eh?
The problem is Toyota is failing backwoods within Ford and Amarok because the 3 liter V6 D is very popular in South Africa and what did Toyota do take 3.5 liter V6 D away oud all the models especially Fortuners and Hilux bakkies. Upgrade this model with 3.5 Vd D for people who like to have it. So please Toyota come by in South Africa please ♀️♂️
