The next-generation Volkswagen Amarok was teased in official images released by the German automaker in April this year, which followed the release of sketches a couple of months before that. Now, the brand has released a sketch of the upcoming pick-up truck’s headlamp, revealing a little more of the Amarok in detail.
Here, the LED matrix headlamp assembly is depicted with a C-shaped daytime running light (DRL) element that surrounds the main beams. These lighting units feature an active, automatically dipping main beam whenever the Amarok encounters oncoming traffic, street lighting or traffic lights, while the static cornering lights help to additionally illuminate corners in the direction of the turn.
Under the skin, the upcoming Amarok will share a considerable amount with the 2022 Ford Ranger, the fruit of an alliance between the two companies for the co-development of commercial vehicles including body-on-frame pick-up trucks.
Like the Ranger, development for the Amarok has been carried out primarily in Australia and it will be produced in the same South African plant as the Ford model, and it also shares the Ranger’s exterior dimensions; this will measure 5,350 mm long (100 mm longer than its predecessor) with a wheelbase of 3,270 mm (175 mm longer).
Volkswagen has also previously stated that the new Amarok will come with one petrol and four diesel engines, featuring between four to six cylinders and displacing between 2.0 to 3.0 litres.
Given the shared hardware, a likely inclusion will be the Ford 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel in 170 PS/405 Nm (single turbo) and 210 PS/510 Nm (twin-turbo) versions, and a 3.0 litre V6 turbodiesel with 250 PS and 600 Nm of torque. Likely to join the diesels is the 2.3 litre EcoBoost petrol engine that is also part of the 2022 Ranger powertrain line-up.
Inside, Volkswagen has previously stated that the next-generation Amarok will feature a digital instrument cluster and a “tablet-style” infotainment touchscreen, synthetic leather-wrapped dashboard and optional 10-way, power-adjustable front seats; a setup which sounds identical to the interior equipment in the 2022 Ford Ranger.
Also said to be included are a range of drive modes including for off-road conditions and more than 30 driver assistance systems, of which 10 will be new to the Amarok. In the context of equipment available on the Ranger, there is autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert with auto brake and reverse AEB.
