Subaru Sport Mobility Concept debuts as sporty EV off-roader alongside Air Mobility Concept flying car

At this year’s Japan Mobility Show, Subaru brought out two concepts that are completely different from one another. We’ll start with the thing that’s actually a car, the Sport Mobility Concept, which is an all-electric sports car that appears to be a perfect fit for the streets of Night City – any Cyberpunk 2077 fans here?

The static show car is being presented with little details aside from Subaru saying it has an all-wheel drive electric powertrain and a low seating position. As for how it looks, the two-door concept features a wide stance, boxy wheel arches, a raised ride height, chunky body cladding and short overhangs that clearly suggest this to be a vehicle that’s geared for off-roading.

The Sport Mobility Concept also boasts high-mounted LED strips beside the main headlamps, which are reminiscent of fog lamps on Subaru’s rally racers. As for the taillights, they are slim in profile and accompanied by squared off accents extending from the rear wheel arches. Other notable design cues include a rounded glasshouse that looks to promote aerodynamic efficiency in conjunction with the sculpted bodywork and turbofan-style wheels.

All-wheel drive sport coupes are a part of Subaru’s history, as the company previously sold the XT/Alcyone/Vortex in the past, which was followed by the SVX. Short overhangs aside, the general silhouette of the concept is reminiscent of those models as well as Impreza 22B. Could a revival be in the works?

Subaru isn’t saying anything for now, and neither is it confirming this to preview the next-generation WRX, which has been rumoured to go all-electric. Some media outlets even claim this to be the starting point for an all-new BRZ with reference to its perceived size.

Moving on to the other big concept Subaru revealed at JMS, we have the Air Mobility Concept, which is a big drone with six enclosed blades and a passenger compartment. Again, no details were provided but the company says it is working to get flight demonstrations ready. It may sound weird to some that Subaru is in the aerospace segment, but the company is also an aircraft manufacturer and currently builds helicopters under contract for Bell.
