Previewed in Malaysia in January 2024, the GAC Emkoo has now been sighted in public in Malaysia, at what appears to be the Petronas station in Mutiara Damansara, courtesy of Twitter/X user rinmansor.
Models from the GAC brand are sold in Malaysia by Warisan Tan Chong Automotif (WTCA), which launched the GS3 Emzoom locally in April 2024 following the opening of order books in January that year, and the Aion Y Plus that was launched in May 2024.
The Emkoo is a five-seater SUV of the C-segment category, albeit a rather large one at 4,680 mm long, 1,901 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, making it just 11 mm shorter and lower than the sixth-generation Honda CR-V. Its width and wheelbase are comfortably larger than those of the Honda, and the Proton X70 that is of the same segment.
In its native market of China, the GAC Emkoo is offered with 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engines, and a 2.0 litre hybrid setup, though the smaller capacity unit of the two petrol powertrains is likely. The 1.5T unit outputs 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 270 Nm of torque between 1,400 and 4,500 rpm in the B-segment Emzoom, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The example shown at last year’s preview was specified with a seven-inch digital instrument display and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, though the China-market Emkoo gets a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 14.6-inch touchscreen along with a 12-speaker Yamaha sound system.
That said, the show car of last year was a preview unit, and its specifications are not representative of what Malaysia will eventually receive, though safety kit and driver assistance systems could include six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane change assist, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, rear collision warning and a door opening warning.
