2025 Volvo S90 facelift debuts with heavily revised looks – mild hybrid or PHEV with up to 80 km EV range

Nearly a decade after its debut at the North American International Auto Show in 2016, the Volvo S90 has now received its second facelift. Unlike the first facelift announced in 2020, the latest one is a lot more comprehensive and serves to provide customers with an alternative if they want a large Volvo sedan but are not willing to go fully electric with the ES90.

We start with the exterior, which has been refreshed with clear inspiration from the current XC90. At the front, you’ll notice the Thor’s Hammer matrix LED headlamps have a more pronounced T shape for the DRLs. These meet with a wider grille that now sports overlapping diagonal lines for its insert.

Further down, there is a wider central air intake and the corner inlets have been reshaped and oriented vertically. Unlike the SUV, the new S90 gets revised taillights that have a light signature mimicking the T shape DRLs at the front. Volvo also notes two new metallic colours called Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red, while new diamond-cut alloy wheels have been added to the catalogue.

On the inside, the new S90 adopts the XC90’s redesigned dashboard that has a larger 11.2-inch central infotainment touchscreen that sticks out rather than being flush previously. This comes with the brand’s new-generation user interface announced back in January this year. The sedan also gains enhanced sound insulation, with adaptive suspension being equipped as standard to make it “more comfortable than ever.”

Powertrain details are limited for now, but the company says the S90 will be available as a plug-in hybrid with an electric-only range of up to 80 km following the WLTP standard. A mild hybrid version featuring a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and front-wheel drive will also be offered.

“The S90 is a key part of our product portfolio for the coming years in some of our Asian markets. Together with the new fully electric ES90, the new S90 ensures we have a complete and attractive offering for customers who value safety and want to drive a large, sleek Volvo sedan,” said Erik Severinson, chief product and strategy officer at Volvo Cars.

The facelifted S90 will launch first in China this summer, with other markets set to follow.
