The government has been urged by lawmakers to postpone its plans to introduce RON 95 subsidy rationalisation and other fiscal reforms such as the move to increase electricity tariffs given the uncertainty in the global economy, The Star reports.
Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said that any policy changes, especially fiscal measures that could put pressure on costs, weaken business sentiment and ultimately burden consumers should be deferred for the time being.
“The rationalisation of RON95 subsidies in June this year should be put on hold, if possible, and the same goes for the hike in electricity tariffs in July,” he said in parliament.
Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng voiced a similar tone, saying that the floating of RON 95 prices to match market rates should also be delayed, as should the hike in electricity tariffs. He added that the recent announcement to defer the expansion of the sales and services tax (SST) scope from May 1 was a welcome move.
The government is scheduled to introduce targeted RON 95 subsidies in the middle of the year, but there has been a lack of clarity so far over the implementation mechanism that will be used. Up to March, the government had yet to define how it would establish eligibility for targeted subsidies as well as define a mechanism despite having reviewed four proposals.
However, that same month, finance minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said that the mechanism would be based on a two-tier pricing system with both subsidised and non-subsidised prices, with MyKad determining things.

with the US tariffs negotiation being “unsuccessful” and business will suffer and potentially people losing their jobs, the removal of subsidies will worsen the situation. Unless Malaysia managed to find alternatives to circumvent Trump’s tariffs, Malaysians are not ready for any rise in inflation.
Reduce the RON95 subsidy by half at least this year. This move will force many to think of alternative way to commute to work and choose the place they should stay. In KV there are people who stay at Semenyih, Klang, Puncak Alam etc but work at KL which is 40km distance away. Best part is both husband and wife workplace is far from their house where they need to drive separate vehicles to work. Then they blame the public transport not good so that they “forced” to drive to work but why don’t they choose to stay somewhere near train stations or stay nearby workplace.
In SG, Korea and Japan their public transport is so well because people are staying near to stations or easy to access to public transport. It is “us” need to compromise to stay near to public transport.
In Msia every year gov spent tens of billion on fuel subsidy and this is heavy burden. In year 2022 gov spent RM23 billion on RON95 subsidy alone. The cost to build MRT2 is RM30b. Mean if cutting half RON95 subsidy gov can have 30b budget in 3 years to build 1 MRT line. In other states gov can build LRT where the cost is about half of MRT. Imagine 10 years gov can save at least RM 100b, gov can takes this money to build few MRT and LRT in major cities plus buying tens of thousand of buses for whole Malaysia.
So first thing, remove or reduce the RON95 subsidy. In most countries with advance public transport their fuel price is much higher than Malaysia. Some said we have petroleum, bear in mind Saudi Arabia has much bigger petroleum volume than us but their fuel price is higher. Don’t compare Brunei, the total population is only 400k, our 1 year car sales unit is more than Brunei population. Brunei gov has no pressure to subsidy because of small population.
Saved money will enter some else’s pocket rather than helping the rakyat
Najib uses 1MDB to eat money,
Anwar uses Madani to eat money.
If you still cant tell then you’re probably dumb.
At least 1MDB gave us Bandar Malaysia, Merdeka 118, TRX, PNB Tower, ECRL & Pan Borneo Highway. What did Madani gave us again? Oh wait, reduced subsidies burdening B40s… tax hikes incoming… inflation all time high. PMX is turning out to be worse than Najib!
Let them do it, PH Gomen just want to punish the B40 for not voting them and after this will never vote them ever again. T20 wont care and just raise prices now that eggs are no longer capped too.
Just reintroduce RON92 regular grade unleaded petrol as an affordable fuel for lower income motorist.
Isn’t that what RON95 was for? Its was the altenative to RON97 then.
What use if few years later Madani will remove RON92 subsidy as well. We go back to using kerosene as fuel?
