After hinting at a new model arrival via a couple of teaser posts earlier this month, BYD Cars Malaysia has officially revealed the identity of the next vehicle it will launch, and as surmised, it’s the BYD Atto 2, complete with Carpy, the capybara mascot, in tow. In a post made on its Facebook and Instagram pages, the company stated that the compact SUV will be officially launched on July 24, with the car open for public viewing – and test drives- at Heritage Valley on July 25-27.
Unveiled in China in February last year as the Yuan Up, the all-electric Atto 2 had its first showing in the region back in March at the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show. Measuring in at 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, 1,675 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm, the Atto 2 will slot in between the Dolphin and Atto 3 Ultra when it arrives here.
In China, the Atto 2/Yuan Up is available in five variant forms, priced from 96,800 yuan to 119,800 yuan (RM57k and RM71k, at the current forex rate). Two powertrain options are available in the domestic market, the first being a single 95 PS/180 Nm front-mounted motor powered by a 32 kWh battery, and the other a 177 PS/290 Nm motor powered by a 45.12 kWh battery.
In terms of charging, the 32 kWh unit accepts up to 45 kW of DC charging, while the 45.12 kWh battery can be recharged at up to 65 kW DC, enabling a 10-80% recharge in 37 minutes. With 11 kW AC, the unit can be fully charged in 5.5 hours.
Range-wise, the 32 kWh battery offers the Atto 2 offers up to 301 km on a single charge, based on the Chinese domestic CLTC testing protocol, while the larger 45.12 kWh battery provides up to 401 km of CLTC-rated range, which in markets outside China is good enough for 312 km of WLTP-rated travel.
With global markets getting the more powerful motor and larger capacity battery, it had been assumed that this would also be what we would be getting, but the automaker recently revealed to the Australian press that the Atto 2 will enter that market in two trim levels, equipped with the 177 PS/290 Nm motor as anticipated, but with a larger 51.1 kWh battery, which would provide around 350 km of WLTP range.
While specs remain undisclosed, it’s likely that we could see this higher capacity unit, now that its existence has been mentioned – we’ll know soon enough when the Atto 2 is finally revealed next week.
