The BYD Atto 2 has now been launched in Malaysia, following its Thailand debut at the Bangkok Motor Show earlier in March this year. The Atto 2 arrives in Malaysia in a sole variant, priced at RM100,000.

Known as the Yuan Up in China, the Atto 2 is a compact electric SUV that slots into the brand’s range in between the the Dolphin and the Atto 3, being larger than the former and smaller than the latter.

The comparison of their respective dimensions, leading with the Atto 2, are as follows:

Outside of the BYD product line-up, the Atto 2, size-wise, is comparable to the B-segment Proton X50 which measures  4,330 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,609 mm tall with a 2,620 mm wheelbase, while the Honda HR-V measures in at 4,347 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,591 mm tall with a 2,610 mm wheelbase.

Powertrain for the Atto 2 comes courtesy of a single-motor FWD setup producing 177 PS and 290 Nm. Thus equipped, the Atto 2 is claimed to attain the 0-100 km/h acceleration benchmark in 7.9 seconds, and go on to a top speed of 160 km/h.

This is paired with the 51.13 kWh battery – the same as that for the Australian market – which offers up to 410 km of range on the NEDC protocol, or 350 km of range on the WLTP testing standard.

For charging, the Atto 2 gets a 7 kW AC onboard charger, while fast charging is supported at up to 82 kW DC; based on the Hong Kong market model with the same specifications, this takes 28 minutes to go from 30-80% state of charge. Conversely to charge or power external devices, the Atto 2 can supply vehicle-to-load (V2L) output at up to 3.3 kW.

In China, the 45.12 kWh battery pack is the largest on offer for its domestic market, bringing a CLTC-rated range of 401 km, or 312 km when going by the more realistic WLTP testing standard.

Suspension layout is comprised of MacPherson struts in front and a torsion beam at the rear, while brakes feature ventilated discs on the front axle and solid discs at the rear axle. Alloy wheels are standard, measuring 17 inches and shod in tyres measuring 215/60R17.

Inside, the Atto 2 gets an 8.8-inch driver’s instrument display and a 12.8-inch infotainment display, while smartphones can be recharged on a 50-watt wireless charging pad on the centre console just below the infotainment screen. Smartphone connectivity offered in the Atto 2 includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Malaysian market Atto 2 takes after the Hong Kong-market RHD model in using a column-mounted stalk drive selector, rather than the LHD unit displayed at BIMS 2025 which uses a centre console-mounted drive selector. As such, the RHD configuration employs a single row of buttons for drive modes, hazard lights, hill hold, start-stop, wireless device charger, front screen demister and audio volume control.

Upholstery for the Atto 2 is synthetic leather, with ventilated front seats. Driving assistance systems in the Atto 2 include forward collision warning and emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, brake override, and traffic jam assist, and these are complemented by a 360-degree surround view monitor, while passive safety kit is comprised of six airbags.

For Malaysia, the BYD Atto 2 is sold with complimentary accessories including a vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapter and a Type 2 to three-pin plug cable. Warranty for the Atto 2 in Malaysia is six years or 150,000 km for the vehicle overall, eight years or 160,000 km for the high-voltage battery, and eight years or 150,000 km for the drive unit.

The first 800 buyers in Malaysia will get an easy ownership launch package worth RM13,500, comprised of zero instalment payments for the first six months (based on a six-year loan tenure) exclusively when financed with a Sime Motors panel bank.

For ease of charging, the first 800 owners of the Atto 2 in Malaysia can choose to either get a free home charger (before installation charges) if you live in a residential home, while those who reside in high-rise locations can opt for a 12-month Sime Platinum 4+ by Power Up subscription programme which offers mobile vehicle charging up to four times a month, vehicle hand-wash, vacuum and tyre shine services up to twice a month, and free EV rescue service up to twice a year (for selected areas only).

BYD Atto 2 EV previewed at PACE 2025 – compact SUV with 350 km range; X50/HR-V size; launch on July 24

The BYD Atto 2 will make its Malaysian launch debut next week on July 24, 2025. Before that happens, the new electric vehicle (EV) is being previewed for the first time here at the paultan.org Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) 2025, which is ongoing from July 19-20 at the Setia City Convention Centre (SCCC).

So, what is the Atto 2? Well, it is a compact electric SUV that is called the Yuan Up in China. First revealed back in February 2024, it will slot in between the Dolphin and Atto 3 – both of which we currently have here – when launched. In terms of dimensions, the Atto 2 is sized appropriately to take up its position in the line-up, as this overview indicates:

    BYD Atto 2

    • Length: 4,310 mm
    • Width: 1,830 mm
    • Height: 1,675 mm
    • Wheelbase: 2,620 mm

    BYD Dolphin

    • Length: 4,290 mm
    • Width: 1,770 mm
    • Height: 1,570 mm
    • Wheelbase: 2,700 mm

    BYD Atto 3

    • Length: 4,455 mm
    • Width: 1,875 mm
    • Height: 1,615 mm
    • Wheelbase: 2,720 mm

BYD Atto 2 EV previewed at PACE 2025 – compact SUV with 350 km range; X50/HR-V size; launch on July 24

If you need a comparison model that isn’t a BYD, the Atto 2 is around the size of a Proton X50, which measures 4,330 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,609 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. The HR-V can also be another point of comparison size-wise at 4,347 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,591 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,610 mm.

Most of you will be interested to know the price of the Atto 2, for which we don’t have a definite answer for now. If you would like to make an educated guess, here’s some context: the Dolphin currently starts from RM100,700 on-the-road without insurance for the base Dynamic Standard and goes up to RM125,600 for the top-spec Premium Extended.

Meanwhile, the Atto 3 only comes in Ultra guise that goes for RM124,500 OTR without insurance. It’s possible the Atto 2’s pricing will overlap one or both of its siblings, so post your guesses in the comments below.

Powertrain details for our market are also not available for now. In its home market of China, the Atto 2/Yuan Up is offered with three powertrain combinations, the first with a 32-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery powering a front electric motor rated at 95 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) and 180 Nm of torque.

This setup is good for a CLTC-rated range of 301 km, but there’s also the option of a larger 45.12-kWh unit for 401 km of range. The latter can be had with a more power electric motor serving up 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW) and 290 Nm, making it the third option that curiously has the same range of 401 km, or 312 km if following the WLTP standard.

It is assumed that the larger battery (45.12 kWh) and more powerful electric motor (177 PS) would be the combination for our market, but BYD recently revealed that Australia will get the Atto 2 with the 177 PS motor and an even larger 51.1-kWh battery for about 350 km of WLTP range. This combo could be what comes our way but we’ll wait for official word from BYD Malaysia.

In terms of charging, the Atto 2 in China supports DC fast charging capped at 65 kW for the larger 45.12-kWh battery (45 kW for the smaller 32-kWh one), with a 10-80% state of charge reached in 37 minutes. There’s also AC charging support up to 11 kW, with a full charge taking 5.5 hours.

The car being displayed at PACE 2025 has heavily tinted windows and is wrapped with a livery featuring Carpy the capybara, the rodent ambassador for the Atto 2. Equipment that we can make out include 17-inch wheels and an ADAS suite, both of which are cost options in China.

Other features are LED exterior lighting and the ability to unlock the car using a NFC-enabled smartphone (sensor is on the side mirror) Expect the interior to come with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a rotating infotainment touchscreen measuring at least 10.1 inches (a 12.8-inch option is for higher trims in China).

BYD Atto 2 coming to Malaysia – 51.1 kWh battery, 350 km range estimated; registrations of interest open

Something new is cooking, so says the BYD Cars Malaysia Facebook page. This should be in reference to the BYD Atto 2 that was teased, albeit not directly, given the attendant capybara in the imagery, following the prior capybara mention from the brand’s communication registrations of interest for the EV.

First unveiled in February 2024 in China as the Yuan Up, the Atto 2 is positioned between the Dolphin and the Atto 3, and made its Thailand debut at the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show in March this year. The Atto 2 measures 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, 1,675 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. By comparison, the Dolphin is 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall with a 2,700 mm wheelbase.

At its China debut, the Atto 2/Yuan Up was offered in five variants, priced from 96,800 yuan to 119,800 yuan (RM59k and RM73k at the time). This offered a choice of two powertrain options, the first begin a single 95 PS/180 Nm front-mounted motor powered by a 32 kWh battery, and the other being a 177 PS/290 Nm motor powered by a 45.12 kWh battery.

BYD Atto 2 at 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show

The base-specification 32 kWh battery offers up to 301 km of range on the Chinese domestic CLTC testing protocol, while the larger 45.12 kWh battery offered up to 401 km of range on the same standard as of March; the larger battery is the specification offered outside China, where it gets a WLTP rating of 312 km.

In terms of charging, the Atto 2 with the 32 kWh battery can take up to 45 kW of DC charging, while the 45.12 kWh battery specification can be recharged at up to 65 kW DC, enabling a 10-80% recharge in 37 minutes. Meanwhile, home charging at up to 11 kW AC fully charges the vehicle in 5.5 hours.

More recently, BYD has told Australian press that the Atto 2 will enter the Australian market with two trim levels, both with the 130 kW (177 PS)/290 Nm motor and a larger 51.1 kWh battery. With this battery size, and extrapolating from the 45.12 kWh battery variant’s range estimate of 312 km, the 51.1 kWh battery should offer range in the region of 350 km.

For equipment, the Atto 2 in Thailand gets 16-inch wheels, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen and powered front seats. The Atto 2/Yuan Up in China does without active driver assistance systems as standard, though these can be specified as an option.

As for the Malaysian market, BYD Sime Motors has opened registrations of interest for this EV. Keen?

BYD Atto 2 debuts at Bangkok Motor Show – sub-Atto 3 EV SUV; up to 312 km WLTP range; Malaysia next?

The BYD Atto 2 has made its debut at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) after being spied several days prior. While the unit spotted out in the wild was right-hand drive, the example currently on display at the event is in left-hand drive form.

Known as the Yuan Up in China, the Atto 2 was revealed to the world in February 2024 and slots in between the Dolphin and Atto 3 (called the Yuan Plus in China). In terms of dimensions, the Atto 2 measures 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, 1,675 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm.

By comparison, the Dolphin we have here is 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,570 mm and its wheelbase spans 2,700 mm. Meanwhile, the Atto 3, which recently got updated in Malaysia, is 4,455 mm long, 1,875 mm wide, 1,615 mm tall and the wheelbase is 2,720 mm.

BYD Atto 2 debuts at Bangkok Motor Show – sub-Atto 3 EV SUV; up to 312 km WLTP range; Malaysia next?

In China, the Atto 2/Yuan Up is offered in five variants priced between 96,800 and 119,800 yuan (about RM59k and RM73k). Two powertrains are available, with the first sporting a front electric motor rated at 95 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) and 180 Nm of torque that is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds.

This electric motor draws power from a Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with an energy capacity of 32 kWh for 301 km of range following the CLTC standard. There’s also the option of a 45.12-kWh unit that bumps the range to 401 km.

The larger battery can also be had with more powerful electric motor delivering 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW) and 290 Nm with the same CLTC-rated range of 401 km. For global markets outside China, this is the version being offered, and it has a WLTP-rated range of 312 km. DC fast charging is capped at 65 kW for the larger battery (45 kW for the smaller one), with a 10-80% state of charge reached in 37 minutes, while an 11-kW AC wallbox charger fully charges the car in 5.5 hours.

BYD Atto 2 debuts at Bangkok Motor Show – sub-Atto 3 EV SUV; up to 312 km WLTP range; Malaysia next?

In terms of equipment, this example comes with 16-inch wheels, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen and powered front seats. The Yuan Up/Atto 2 in its home market doesn’t come with active driver assistance systems as standard but these can be added as an option.

The debut of the Atto 2 in Thailand suggests the electric vehicle (EV) could also make its way to Malaysia to fill in the gap between the Dolphin (currently from RM100,700 to RM125,600 OTR) and the new Atto 3 Ultra at RM123,800. Are you hoping this EV comes here?

  • BYD Atto 2 spied in Thailand, launch this year – sub-Atto 3 EV SUV also coming to Malaysia soon?

BYD Atto 2 spied in Thailand, launch this year – sub-Atto 3 EV SUV also coming to Malaysia soon?

Look what we have here – the BYD Atto 2 has been spotted in Thailand in right-hand-drive form, just months after it was confirmed for export markets such as the UK. The car was revealed in China in February 2024 as the Yuan Up, and just as its two names suggest, this electric B-segment SUV will slot below the Atto 3 (known as the Yuan Plus in China) in the carmaker’s lineup.

Images that appeared on the Car News Update Facebook page show the Atto 2 wearing very light camouflage, certainly not enough to hide the car’s sharp, upright design. Of more importance is the interior, where the steering wheel is now on the right side, albeit with the BYD badge still taped up (the Chinese-market car has the character Yuan).

The rest of the interior shot is very dark, but one can just about make out the 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen and 8.8-inch digital instrument display. However, the centre console appears to have been ripped up and the crystal gear selector “pebble” is nowhere to be seen here. Perhaps right-hook markets will get the column-mounted shift stalk already used by cars fitted with BYD’s God’s Eye autonomous driving system in China.

Globally, the Atto 2 is powered by a single front motor producing 177 PS (130 kW) and 290 Nm of torque, getting it from zero to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 160 km/h. A 45.12 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate battery provides a range of just 312 km on the WLTP cycle, while DC fast charging capped at only 65 kW tops up the battery from 10 to 80% in 37 minutes. An 11 kW AC wallbox charger, meanwhile, provides a full charge in 5.5 hours.

The sighting of the Atto 2 in China raises the possibility of it being brought to Malaysia. It will, however, hit a snag in the form of tax exemptions coming to an end this year, meaning that even if it does get here this year, it will enjoy just a few months of being tax-free at most, before prices shoot up in 2026. The company has yet to make public any plans for local assembly, although its ties to Sime Motors here means that a CKD operation at the latter’s Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah can be tooled up in short order.

The Atto 2 was spied next to the Qin L EV, a new electric sedan that’s separate from the Qin L DM-i plug-in hybrid. That car, however, has yet to even go on sale in China, and this camouflaged prototype is a left-hand-drive unit; as such, even if it is earmarked for the Southeast Asian region, it will only probably arrive much later.

BYD Atto 2 to launch in UK, Europe – it’s the Yuan Up

The BYD Yuan Up is going to launch in the UK and Europe as soon as next month, wearing a BYD Atto 2 name tag. Bridging the DolphinAtto 3 gap, the little SUV will go up against the likes of the Opel/Vauxhall Frontera, the MG ES5 (the ZS EV‘s replacement) and the Suzuki eVitara/Toyota Urban Cruiser twins.

From the single photo we have, we can see that the BYD Atto 2 (at least for Europe) wears a simpler-looking lower bumper – China’s Yuan Up has a busier double-upturned U design. Different wheels, too.

First unveiled in February in China, the Yuan Up is 4,310 mm long (-145 mm versus Atto 3), 1,830 mm wide (-45 mm) and 1,675 mm tall (+60 mm). Its 2,620 mm wheelbase is 100 mm down on the Atto 3.

For further context, the Dolphin is 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall and its wheelbase measures 2,700 mm. To draw comparisons, the Yuan Up is slightly larger than a Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3.

    Chinese-market BYD Yuan Up pictured

Same e-Platform 3.0 as on the Dolphin, Atto 3 (also called the Yuan Plus) and Seal. Citing a Green NCAP report, Auto Express says that the Euro-spec Atto 2 will get a 42.4 kWh battery and a range of between 310 and 463 km (China gets 32 kWh and 45.1 kWh batteries for 301 km and 401 km respectively).

For the motor, it seems the Continent will get the 177 PS/290 Nm one, which is the more potent of the two options in China (the other is a 95 PS unit), yielding a 7.9-second century sprint time.

Auto Express reports that the Atto 2 features a rotatable 12.8-inch touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, wireless phone charging and crystal gear lever, just like the Yuan Up. Those centre air-con vents look like they’re mounted pretty low in the dashboard, being in line with the glovebox opener.

UK prices should start from well under £30k (RM169k), AE says. The existence of a right-hand drive car gives us much hope – the Atto 3 is doing very well in Malaysia, so what do you think of its smaller sibling’s chances here?

2024 BYD Yuan Up revealed in China – smaller than Atto 3; up to 401 km EV range; from RM67k estimated

BYD has revealed the new Yuan Up, which is a fully electric SUV built on the company’s e-Platform 3.0 that is also used by the Dolphin, Atto 3 (also known as the Yuan Plus) and Seal. Scheduled to go on sale in China from March this year, the Yuan Up is part of the carmaker’s Dynasty series and is expected to have a starting price of around 100,000 yuan (RM66,975).

In terms of size, the Yuan Up measures 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, 1,675 mm tall and has wheelbase of 2,620 mm. That makes it smaller than the Atto 3 we have here, which is 4,455 mm long, 1,875 mm wide, 1,615 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,720 mm.

For further context, the Dolphin is 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall and its wheelbase measures 2,700 mm. To draw comparisons, the Yuan Up is slightly larger than a Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3.

2024 BYD Yuan Up revealed in China – smaller than Atto 3; up to 401 km EV range; from RM67k estimated

According to CarNewsChina, the Yuan Up comes with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack that is available in two energy capacities – 32 kWh and 45.1 kWh – for a range of up to 301 km and 401 km respectively. There will also be two electric motor options providing either 95 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) or 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW).

Design-wise, BYD’s new electric vehicle (EV) adopts the Dragon Face design concept that is also applied to the larger Song L. Highlights include a front bumper with what appears to be a prominent underguard, slim headlamps with integrated DRLs and discreet corner air inlets.

Moving on from the front end, we see a bit of the smart #1 in the profile, albeit with more pronounced creases and chunky rocker panels on the sides. The rear taillights feature a signature reminiscent of what’s on the Dolphin, while the lower apron mimics the front.

Inside, you’ll find a D-shaped steering wheel in front of an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, while the other display inside the cabin is a 12.8-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard. Like in the Atto 3, the infotainment can be rotated if you prefer a portrait screen format instead of a landscape one. There’s even a head-up display, although this will likely be standard on higher-end variants.

Other notable aspects of the cabin are powered front seats, perforated leatherette upholstery, a wireless charging pad and a crystal gear selector. Not much in the way of buttons, although there are some on the centre console for selected vehicle functions. The Yuan Up is also available with a generously-sized sunroof, and based on the photos, boot space looks to be impressive as well.

So, what do you think of the Yuan Up? Is this an EV that BYD should introduce in Malaysia? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
