Rapid KL to ramp up trains for ASEAN Summit – some bus, Rapid KL On-Demand routes could suffer delays

The upcoming ASEAN Summit and its numerous road closures are sure to drive many to use public transport from May 23-27. Rapid KL will extend weekday peak times for its trains by one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening (from the normal 7.00-9.30 am and 5.00-7.30 pm, to 6.30-10.00 am and 4.30-8.00 pm) throughout said dates, and boost train frequency during the May 24-25 weekend.

“If there is an increase in passengers, Rapid KL is prepared to increase the number of trains. A total of 400 additional staff have also been deployed at selected rail stations to help smoothen the movement of passengers and ASEAN delegations using public transport services,” Prasarana Malaysia said in a statement, adding that monitoring and operational control will also be ramped up.

However, several bus and Rapid KL On-Demand (what the DRT vans are called now) routes could experience delays owing to the road closures. These are Route 402 (LRT Titiwangsa – LRT Maluri), Route 302 (LRT Titiwangsa – KLCC), Route 300 (Pandan Indah Hub – Lebuh Ampang), Route 303 (Taman Mulia Jaya – Lebuh Ampang) and Rapid KL On-Demand (Titiwangsa – Chow Kit Zone).

“Bus users who wish to go to KLCC and surrounding areas are advised to use rail services to avoid traffic congestion,” the statement said, advising passengers to stay updated via Rapid KL’s social media channels and/or the Pulse app.

  • Gombak Integrated Transport Terminal (GITT) to start trial operations on March 15 – new East Coast gateway

The Gombak Integrated Transport Terminal (GITT), or Terminal Bersepadu Gombak, is expected to go into trial operation on March 15, serving as a drop-off point for passengers arriving from the East Coast, transport minister Anthony Loke has said, according to a Bernama report.

Strategically located along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) and close to the Gombak toll plaza and Gombak LRT station, GITT will serve as the main transportation gateway to Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

Loke said that if GITT can be fully operational by the end of this month, it will help reduce the Hari Raya Aidilfitri congestion at the Bandar Tasik Selatan Integrated Terminal (TBS). He added that GITT will begin passenger pick-up services a week later, and that bus tickets can be purchased at TBS as GITT ticket counters are not open yet.

“The ministry, together with the Public Works Department (JKR), will conduct a final inspection by the end of next week,” he told reporters after inspecting the terminal and its interconnectivity with the LRT and East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) services recently.

“Besides express buses, the terminal also connects to intercity buses and is integrated with the Gombak LRT station. Additionally, the construction for the Gombak ECRL station is underway,” he said, adding that ECRL construction is now 79% complete.

GITT will have convenience stores, food and beverage outlets, a 2,000-capacity multi-purpose hall and 1,200 parking lots. The seven-storey terminal is made up of three floors for bus services and four shopping floors. There are also dedicated platforms for persons with disabilities (PwD).

“When passengers purchase tickets, there is a feature that allows them to indicate if they are a PwD. The system will capture this information, ensuring that the bus is assigned to a PwD-friendly platform,” said Loke.

Following the tragic death two days ago of a visually-impaired man who fell on to the LRT tracks and got run over by a train, transport minister Anthony Loke has said that Prasarana will install platform screen doors (PSD) and Smart CCTV at all LRT stations.

“The ministry of transport is currently working closely with all relevant parties, especially Prasarana, to conduct a detailed investigation. I have instructed that the safety aspects at all train stations, especially facilities for the disabled, be reviewed and improved.

“Prasarana will take several important steps to prevent such incidents from recurring. Smart CCTV that can detect risky behavior will be installed at stations. In the long term, Prasarana is planning to install PSDs throughout all LRT routes as an effort to strengthen passenger safety,” he said.

“The safety and welfare of passengers is always our priority. The government is committed to ensuring a safer, more inclusive and user-friendly public transport system, for the benefit of all Malaysians,” he said, adding that passengers who require additional assistance, including the disabled, can contact Prasarana staff or the station’s auxiliary police to ensure their needs are given due attention.

Among the organisations welcoming the move are the Society of the Blind in Malaysia (SBM) and OKU Sentral. According to SBM president Mohd Mustaza Mohd Zain, there have been to date at least 20 accidents involving the visually-impaired falling on to rail lines, including at KTM, LRT and monorail stations.

“Providing platform screen doors at rail stations is important to prevent such incidents. Such mitigation facilities should be among the features that exist in the design of every rail station throughout Malaysia.

“Furthermore, the number of platform screen doors should also be in line with the number of passenger carriage doors for the safety of the visually-impaired,” Mohd Mustaza said in a statement.

“Safety risk reduction measures at rail stations cannot rely solely on technological elements. Prasarana and KTMB also need to ensure that control officers are on the platform to monitor and assist users, especially the visually-impaired.

“The lack of officers at strategic locations such as on the platform is among the causes of continued accidents involving the disabled at rail stations,” he added.

  • Prasarana targets one disruption/million km by 2026

Prasarana targets one disruption/million km by 2026

Prasarana is targeting a Mean Kilometres Between Failure (MKBF) of one million for its trains by 2026’s second quarter, Bernama reports. That means an average of one disruption for every million kilometres the train travels.

“What is termed as disruption is when the train is stationary for more than five minutes. A more serious disruption is when the train does not move for more than 15 minutes. We may have reduced the number of disruptions (71 in 2024 versus 118 in 2023), but we are certainly far from satisfied.

“We want to further improve our performance. So, for this year, we aim to reduce the total number of disruptions from 71 to as minimum as possible. Hopefully, by 2026, our MKBF will reach one million km,” transport minister Anthony Loke said today when tabling the 2024 Prasarana Performance Report and 2025 plan.

“It means we do not want any disruptions in the one million kilometres travelled… when the train has travelled up to one million kilometres, then only there will be one disruption. It means a much lower frequency of disruption,” he added.

He also revealed that train operation efficiency – covering the Kelana Jaya and Ampang LRT lines, Kajang and Putrajaya MRT lines, and KL Monorail – improved by 33% in 2024, and that Prasarana is also targeting an average of 1.4 million train and bus passengers a day by December 2025 (a record 1.5 million was achieved on December 31, 2024).

“The average number of passengers using public transport under Rapid rose to 1.18 million per day in 2024 compared to 955,000 passengers in 2023, which is a 24% increase. In 2022, the figure was 681,000. This is a very positive impact and is almost back at the pre-COVID-19 levels in 2019. So, this is a proud achievement,” Loke said.

On revenue, Prasarana saw a modest 5% boost in 2024, driven mainly by the ridership increase. Loke said the company is looking into advertising, corporate sponsorship, station naming rights and land utilisation as additional revenue streams.

“Most importantly for Prasarana, moving forward is to ensure reliable service for the public. Only then will it give more confidence in using public transport,” he said, adding that new lines such as LRT3 Shah Alam would boost ridership.

Rapid KL held a press conference earlier today to address some questions from the media on the matter of 16 stations on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line to be shut down for a week starting today.

As we previously reported, the problem that the KJ line is currently facing is related to the Automatic Train Control (ATC) system, which is said to be supplied by Thales.

In the press conference it was mentioned that every time Rapid KL tried to repair it on their own based on remote feedback and SOP provided by Thales, the repair only lasts a day and the problem reoccurs.

So currently the technical team is awaiting the arrival of 2 experts from Thales who are currently en route. They are expected to arrive in Malaysia tomorrow.

If the technical team is able to complete the repair work and testing earlier, it is hoped that the line can be reopened sooner than the currently announced 7 day period. At the moment, 7 days is the time period announced with buffers included so that it does not have be extended later.

LRT Kelana Jaya Line – 16 stations closed from November 9-15 2022 to facilitate repair works

Rapid KL has announced that 16 stations along the LRT Kelana Jaya Line will be closed for 7 days beginning today up to November 15 2022 to facilitate repair works.

LRT Kelana Jaya line will not be completely closed – it still be usable for stations that still remain open, but trains from Putra Heights station will turn back at Lembah Subang and trains from Gombak station will turn back at Damai station. However, please take note that the operating hours for the remaining stations will be cut shorter and operation hours will end at 11pm.

What is causing LRT Kelana Jaya Line problems?

Problems on the LRT Kelana Jaya line started on Saturday morning (November 5) and since then, service has been going up and down while Rapid KL works with Canadian OEM supplier Thales Group to fix a malfunction with the line’s Automatic Train Control (ATC) system.

With overnight repair sessions to minimise service disruption failing to solve the issue, it looks like Rapid KL has decided to suspend the affected part of the line for a week in hopes to fix the issue permanently.

LRT Kelana Jaya Line disruption due to Automatic Train Control (ATC) electronics malfunction

Rapid KL has released information on what happened during last night’s LRT Kelana Jaya Line disruption that caused services to be halted prematurely.

According to the statement, an issue with the Automatic Train Control (ATC) system electronics had a malfunction on Saturday (November 5) morning, but a reset on the component seemed to fix the issue.

After midnight, a software update on the ATC system was performed and after the system was tested, they found that it was stable so normal operations continued on Sunday (November 6). However, malfunctions continued to occur at 10:38am and 8:39pm on Monday (November 7).

After train service was halted, Rapid KL worked with the Canadian OEM supplier Thales Group to investigate the root cause of the issues. As of 5:30am today, the technical team managed to stabilise the ATC system but are currently observing to see if any further issues occur.

UPDATE: As of 3:53pm there seems to be issues on the Kelana Jaya line again.
