Datuk Seri Syed Zainal’s parting words to Proton

Datuk Seri Syed Zainal’s parting words to Proton

In the six odd years that Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin has been at the helm of the national car company Proton, he’s definitely gained quite a number of fans, who not only admire his work in having led Proton to produce better and better models with each launch, but his inspiring public speeches as well. Just for nostalgia sake, we’ve dug up our archive video of the Proton Exora launch.

We’ve also got a hold of an email that he’s sent out to all Proton staff, announcing that yesterday was his physical last day at Proton, after you exclude leave days from his last day, which is July 4, 2012.

The original Bahasa Malaysia version will of course hold the original message that Syed Zainal intended to deliver, but if you want an English translation, Proton Edar Dealers Association president Armin Baniaz Pahamin has a translation on his blog.

“There You’ll Be”
When I think back
On these times
And the dreams
We left behind
I’ll be glad ’cause
I was blessed to get
To have you in my life
When I look back
On these days
I’ll look and see your face
You were right there for me
In my dreams
I’ll always see you soar
Above the sky
In my heart
There will always be a place
For you for all my life
I’ll keep a part
Of you with me
And everywhere I am
There you’ll be
And everywhere I am
There you’ll be
Well you showed me
How it feels
To feel the sky
Within my reach
And I always
Will remember all
The strength you
Gave to me
Your love made me
Make it through
Oh, I owe so much to you
You were right there for me
‘Cause I always saw in you
My light, my strength
And I want to thank you
Now for all the ways
You were right there for me
You were right there for me
For always

Salam hormat dari saya,
Syed Zainal

Manly tears were shed reading it. He’s the best MD, not just for Proton, but in Malaysia. Which other Malaysian company has such charismatic and humble leader like DSSZ?

Proton will never feel the same, much like Apple doesn’t feel the same anymore after Jobs died.

Thank you Datuk Seri Syed Zainal for being awesome

if he’s not good enough to become a janitor in apple, I guess mere mortals, arm chair critic like u and I, mere blog readers, don’t stand a chance to be even a pest in apple. and I don’t think a janitor in apple needs a degree in engineering from the US like Syed Zainal has to be give a position.

I used to hate Proton products and my first proton is never leaving good memories.. Giving nightmare over and over. He had bring Proton back from the dark times, stop asking protection as I can hear and putting confident back to ppl. That’s the reason. I bought back proton car and I have just bough my 3rd proton car under his leadership.

Though I can afford much much better imported car, yet Proton is still appealing.

All the best to you and your lagecy will stay and you will be missed.

sad indeed, he is a man with a vision and determination, whomever who are lucky enough to get his services would be lucky indeed.

The idea of PROTON was a good vision but the implementation caused many Malaysians a lot of heartache. Sad but true. Before PROTON was borne, cars in bolehland was considered affordable indeed but once born PROTON changed the landscape of Malaysia forever.

Anyway kudos to the man who had the vision to overcome the stigma PROTON had attracted to move the company forward, what would PROTON be today without this visionary who is down to earth and humble, not many people like this nowdays.

Again, Syabas DSZ, a true leader among men

So sad to read DSZ’s final words before leaving Proton. DSZ, you’re the great nazir of Masjid al-Falah USJ 9, and you’ve brought the spiritual leadership from your experiences in leading the mosque to both Perodua and Proton. And Allah has already responded by turning Proton from shame back to fame.

Today most Malaysians cry for your departure from Proton. I guess after this the only thing that I should do as a tribute to you is to always support Proton and make sure that Proton will always prosper as how you’ve done it. May Allah bless you always, DSZ.

This is truly sad, it is obvious to everyone that ever since Datuk Seri Syed Zainal has been at the helm of Proton, there have been nothing but improvements only. Great cars, great marketing, great collaboration with international parties, etc.

Isn’t everyone proud of seeing good looking cars coming out of Proton? Isn’t everyone proud of the rally team clinching first place in not one but many races? Proud of seeing the Satria Neo S2000 being featured on Top Gear? Proud of Proton to be able to supply to Cusco Japan?

I was very proud of my Saga BLM, family has an Exora too. He came in at a time when Proton was at its lowest, Campro engine was shit, but he addressed the issue head on, IAFM, now CFE. Still not a very good engine, but it wasn’t his decision to use it in the first place.

I sincerely hope he can still be with Proton and return someday. How can DRB-Hicom not recognize his achievements?

Good luck to you DSZ. All the best and good health to you.

Proton is getting brighter and shinier under your leadership. You should stay at least for another years to come or at least you launch the Proton Preve to Australia or so in September caused this BABY PREVE has born under your leadership….

If Proton cannot continue to improves on exterior design, just simply close it and let Perodua do it. Why burden on all of Malaysians. Do like Singapore if you have the brains like them. What kind of cooperatives is this after so many donkey years? Fed up!

Wei bodoh, even Perodua don’t have the know-how to build their own cars but rather alter the original Daihatsu design and use Daihatsu engines and technologies. At least Proton is a lot better in this sense.

  • A very humble man. I know him from my days working with him in PETRONAS in late 80’s until early 90’s. Syed Z as he was known then to us. Together with another ex colleague Arlida Ariff the former CEO of Iskandar they were a great combination in the Peninsular Gas Utilisation Project Phase II. When he was appointed as MD for Proton I have no doubt he will excel in this role. Along the 6 years it is proven that he carried out his role very well and it is very sad to see him leaving PROTON. I must confess I am not a fan of PROTON but I am proud to have him working hard and tireless to uplift PROTON’s image. He left a big shoe to fill in!

such a humble person, a low profile man, no controversies ,made other peoples felt not so alienated to him as a CEO during his presentation speeches on his products and ultimately brought us closer to PROTON.

  • Sad indeed to see a great man leaving Proton at its this stage. Proton have improved a lot under his guard and its is true he left a big shoe to fill. I hope Proton can find a very inspiring, capable and down to earth person to replace him. He is a task master, a leader and a teacher. Anyone knows where is he going?? which company ?? Malaysian Govt really dont know how to appreaciate a capable people like DSZ & Hassan Marican.

    Just my 5 cent

The reason for his success is he is able to face the public, just like other US CEOs. This is very western style, people appreciate it when the CEO cares about them.

  • I believe, it must be something wrong when DRB took over proton. All this while, CheDet must be responsible. He’s the person who fired DSZ. Ppl dont see it.

My opinion, this case same as anwar, musa hitam.

    sape lawan cakap chedet, slashed!!

DRB?? sape pegang DRB? pikir-pikirkan lah..

so sad to see msian is full of corrupted ppl… too much corrupted.

I am not surprised. I worked with DRB. It’s a total joke. Too many Dato’s in a company screws things up. You cannot have opinions there. You can be as bright as the sun, but they will never let you illuminate the darkness.

All decision makings are done by the stupid Dato’s and guess what? All they care is about cost cutting, profit and loss. They never go oustide of the scope. They never let R&D flourishes and they don’t have balls big enough to materialize good inventions out of their R&D.

Too afraid of taking risks. PROTON under DRB will be stagnant with same sh!t for decade, just like Wira used to be sold for a decade.

The reason they are living is because they are assembling good products from other automotive companies (read: VW, Honda, Suzuku, Isuzu etc) but if you ask them to create something, they will probably hand you over a pool of sh!t.

They never care about quality, safety or innovation in their products. Way to ruin things.

The managers in DRB can eff up a company but still not fired for their failures. Happened right in front of my eyes.

Probably their interests in acquiring PROTON is to rebadge some foreign cars OR selling her assets, but don’t be fooled. DRB ain’t NAZA where rebadging will reduce the car price (also sometimes the quality). DRB will rebadge but the same time still eff up your wallet. Look at the VW Passat. Do you think it is worth that much?

Nobody will bash Proton if they learn how to survive in a world without protection. Just imagine how wonderful it is whereby Malaysians got to enjoy their favourite cars at fair prices!!!!
