According to reports, the production version of Volkswagen’s Up! compact is slated to make its debut in September next year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with the car then going on sale towards the end of 2011. Currently, the car is going through its final prototype phase, with pre-production next on the cards.
The first version to come about in the range will be a three-door hatch, with a five-door hatch among the other variants planned. Powertrain choices for the vehicle – which will be made in Slovakia at the VW plant in Bratislava – will be three-cylinder petrol and diesel units, and for starters the production Up! will feature conventional transmissions, followed by a dual-clutch box later.
Originally, the concept was planned as a rear-engined offering, but the production version is expected to feature a front-mounted engine to keep production costs down.
An electric version of the car – based on the Up! blue-e-motion, no doubt – is planned for introduction in 2013, which is when the electric Golf and Jetta variants are also due to make their market debut.

If they manage to make the production car 100% identical to this prototype, it will be the most elegant and smart looking car out there! I will buy two of this car!
don’t think the petrol and diesel unit will look like this….but it’s something cute…haha
Quite ugly car.
The model resembles ( especially rear design) proton’s emas. Could be penned by the same designer.
ya loh, the rear design look like EMAS — oh ya la VW bought Italdesign Giugiaro — but not same actuall– serupa tapi tak sama
more or less like myvi…
It’s Myvi w/o 2 doors
emas look better :-)
fugly looking car..
it is easier to make ultra expensive “engineering projects” like the veyron
the real skills of a car maker come out only when they are able to make a good and innovative mass market car
something TATA did to earn respect with the nano.
have been seeing these pictures for a few years now.
Let us hope for the best VW
and i hope the car not only comes cheap but is cheap to run as well(VW in india cost an arm and leg just for the spares and service)
so sad… i felt the rear engine was the most interesting aspect about it, adding to crash safety, etc…
I saw Plasma TV behind……..
so cute! i love those white walled wheels!
