Volkswagen Beetle Black Turbo edition for the USA

Volkswagen Beetle Black Turbo edition for the USA

The Volkswagen Beetle Turbo will be equipped with the same 2.0 litre TFSI engine as the Volkswagen Scirocco/Golf GTI – that means 200 horsepower and 280Nm of torque, paired to a ultra quick shifting DSG gearbox.

Volkswagen of America will even celebrate the marque’s new fast Beetle with a Volkswagen Beetle Black Turbo edition, limited to 600 units and equipped with plenty of look fast bits to go with the go fast engine – red calipers, special 18 inch wheels, a rear spoiler, etc.

Volkswagen wants the new Beetle to be more unisex rather than just appealing to female drivers. Since the majority of the readers here are guys – what do you think, would you drive a Beetle that had the performance of a Golf GTI?

Look after the jump for photo galleries of the new Beetle.

I think I’d rather have a Golf GTi, or a Mini Cooper S over this. To me, a plain vanila Beetle would suffice. No need for big wheels, spoiler or body kit. Thats how a Beetle is meant to be. Clean without any artificial add ons.

not really, given both the same engine, same blood….i will prefer this performance stylish Beetle over the plain 4 door Golf GTI..

and actually i plan to place the first batch of booking for this car! should be coming in here in next year ? the 2.0T could be around 240k?? since 2 door is always more expensive like the case of Scirocco..

You got the story half wrong my friend. In the UK, the Scirocco is cheaper than the equivalent 3 door Golf GTi, and a 3 door Golf GTi is cheaper than a 5 door one.

Its just something very wrong with the pricing over here.

As much as it is a good idea.. A Beetle is a beetle.. Filled with character and history… And with this new gti idea… It’s just plain character building.. A beetle to me shouldn’t be the well known herbie.. It’s just an one time idea… A beetle to me should be associated to cruising along the road.. Easy rider if you know what I mean… Keep the gti within the intended family like golf and polo… And keep the car identity… Some idea are good to take off.. Some should just remain as that.. Ideas… What I really want from vw to bring into Malaysia is it’s pick up truck…

Since we only get the 4 door GTI here I dont think that its fair to compare the golf with the beetle. Family oriented drivers will still go for the 4 door.

If we are comparing the same cars with the same drive trains with 2 doors, there are the choices of scirocco and TT, with scirocco being a closer rival. I must say that the feeling from driving these cars are the same to me and they are all great to drive. The differences are the road going height and seat positions. So it will probably go down to styling and price.

But I think the new beetle’s more direct competitor would be the Mini Cooper in terms of target market. Both cars have a long lineage of history, both designed for unisex appeal, and both have good performance. VW probably worked hard to ensure that the Bettle will not cannibalize its other current models when designing the Beetle. I would prefer the beetle cause the mini is just too mini for my daily use.

Too bad we dont have the Fiat 500 here. I would have loved to see an Abarth 500 thrown into the mix.

I know plenty of male drivers of the original New Beetle Turbo. At that time it was a cheap way to get a Audi 1.8 20v Turbo without paying Audi prices (i think the 1.8T came to the Golf a little later eventually).

But with the Golf and Scirocco sporting nothing less than spectacular engines, I see really no reason one would buy the “compromized” new New Beetle.

I am just waiting to see when Porsche might get tempted and convert a Beetle into a 911 inspired eco-sporty car…. very much like that Aston did with the silly Cygnet. Sure bring back memories of old beetles with 911 kits pottering around town.

Awesome car.. but I think this car should have been smaller (like mini cooper), that way it is cuter and could fight the Mini.

  • Gimme this Beetle over MINI anytime. Even the friendly to pocket turbodiesel more than enough. This jantan (masculine) Beetle MK III is better than than MKll.

But if VW build Type 2 BUS like this with modern retro design, l’ll go for that car/van mpv anytime.

seriously… is beetle still relevant after all these years? one look at PT Cruiser and i already feel like throwing up big time like the exorcist.. bleerggghhhhhhh…

the overall idea to make a modern beetle is a fail one. even worse with this low-slung roof update. it just looks weird… like a guy with his top skull shaved to half like in my bloody valentine. worse, there will even be a Carrera GT-ish guise coming up in a few months.. i suggest you buy some chi kit tek aun pills this time to ease the ‘cirits’ after watching one…

what the hell VW? poodah chiritttsss!!! hooo…
