Mercedes-Benz CLA breaks cover ahead of debut

cla-2

Pictures of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class have leaked online ahead of its expected Detroit motor show debut next month. We’re not sure if they’re official press shots, but if they’re anything to go by, the baby sedan does look a treat, carrying over quite a number of styling cues (including those lovely swage lines) from the Concept Style Coupe which premiered in Beijing earlier this year.

According to Autocar, the CLA-Class is 47 mm longer, 121 mm wider and 47 mm lower than the C-Class under which it sits, segment-wise, while being 345 mm longer and 35 mm lower than the A-Class on which it is based. 4MATIC all wheel drive will make its debut on the CLA-Class, combined with a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox (7G-DCT).

cla-3

The petrol variants will be powered by turbocharged four-cylinder units – a 120 hp 1.6 litre for the CLA 180, 154 hp 2.0 litre for the CLA 200 and 208 hp 2.0 litre for the CLA 250. The oil burners are the CLA 180 CDI, CLA 200 CDI and CLA 220 CDI, powered by a 108 hp 1.8 litre, 134 hp 1.8 litre and 168 hp 2.2 litre respectively, reports the British publication.

The icing on the cake however, will be the CLA 45 AMG, where 330 hp and upwards of 400 Nm of peak torque from a turbocharged AMG-tuned 2.0 litre engine (same as in the A 45 AMG) will be fed to all four wheels via the 4MATIC + 7G-DCT pairing, which of course will come as standard. More info to emerge as time goes by, so watch this space.

Overall it is cantiq. A pair of foglamps will be something like tourbillon, absent even in the facelifted E-class.

Exterior looks good and the interior is like the A and B class in which is shares the same platform with. But man…the car is too low for Malaysian roads. 47mm lower than the C Class while looks good, is only meant to be a highway cruiser!

Price wise..I’d expect the CLA200 to be slightly more expensive than the B200 and the CLA250 to be just about and if not, more expensive than the C200.

I doubt MBM will bring in the CLA180…no oomph.

On a side note, anyone knows when the iPhone Drive Kit Plus will be available for the B Class? Hopefully comes compatible with the iPhone 5.

Is this B seg or C? It’s a real beauty, both A class and this CLA. Hope both will be here soon.

This is tempting. Great for people who is making their first foray into Mercedes-Benz ownership. Besides, it looks great as well. So it would be interesting to find out how it would be priced. If the CLA 180 starts from 200k, it could just even tempt some people intending to get into a Passat Sport, 508 GT, Mondeo, even Camrys to sacrifice a ‘lil space into getting a Merc.

Only one reservation, though. I do hope the plastics are improved, as the ones in the B-Class, which the CLA’s dashboard resembles, is horridly plasticky and not worthy of the Merc three-pointed star. Even a Volvo V40 has way better plastics than the B-Class!

  • i guess it would be priced at RM250k-RM500k for CLA45 AMG.nice alternate choice apart from C-class coupe.

1 – exterior too much lines, hyundai reminders
2 – LCD display, too prominently sticking onto the dashboard
3 – front bumper and grilles look smashing
4 – interior seats are far better than A/B200, no compare
5 – CLA price is always higher than C or B series, so do expect it to be RM300k..range
6 – Car looks like sport saloon but in term of popularity, its predecessor isn’t as saleable as the C or E seres, something to do with the shape that make you get tired of fast ? hmm

I’m gonna be original and say that this car looks pretty ugly. On top of that, it’s pretty pointless, who is it targeting? The C-class already looks pretty good, borderline tacky if you ask me, this CLA just blew the lid.

I would’ve forgiven that ghastly front bumper if it was cheaper, had only two-doors, and RWD, but kept the same engines, to compete against the GT86 or 370Z, that segment generally.

If the Germans came up with a GT86 contender, that would be great, now the only closest offering they have is I think, the 1M, RS5 and C63, all of which are pretty useless in Malaysia.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 14
    • Well, I can pretty surely say that’s the car is not for folks like you, nor most in Malaysia. It wasn’t really targeted to do well in Malaysia anyway but Malaysia is not the only place Mercedes sells their cars.

Aesthetically, we all have different opinions, I find this just nice. On the other hand, I couldn’t understand why 4 doors, AWD, and the engine that it is offering cannot compete against GT86 or 370Z. Offer me more insight please. Better if it is a direct comparison in bullet point.

Bullet point?! lol.. you don’t pay me enough for that. :D But I’ll indulge..

The beauty of the GT86 is that it’s a simple, honest car, beautiful balance and straight-forward dynamics. It was designed for tail-sliding lunatic enjoyment, at a very reasonable price.

This car could be a worthy contender to the GT86, if Merc got the balance right, RWD and lose the unnecessary rear doors that the target market won’t miss, but kept the 2 liter engine.

I was hoping it would be like a C63 AMG, but without all the burnt tires, ridiculous road tax, and hefty price tag.

        • With all the points not even made clear. Whoever that pays you is either very generous or just plain dumb.

There are 2 2.0L engine mentioned above, I bet you didn’t even read.

AWD can’t drift? Well, switch off traction control on that car and let’s see how it goes.

Why remove the doors, with 2 door you can only get 1 chick, with 4 doors you can get 3 chicks in total.

There left the only 1 point here and that’s the price.

In the end, my question is, why contend in the same category when you have something even better. And a Mercedes (even a truck) is always 1 class higher than any common Toyota.

Even if it had 2 doors and built with RWD, I don’t think it would be as appealing as the 4 series concept.

Anyways I’m a lil confused. This model is based on the A class but its slightly larger than the C class. Wonder what’s the price.

I have a feeling that the picture you are looking at is the CLA 45. I hope the lower variants don’t come with a hideous body kit.
