Logical, isn’t it? Take the much-loved Toyota 86 coupe, lop the roof off, and you have a new roadster model for those who prefer tanning over drifting. Toyota has done exactly that and will bring a concept car to the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
Called the FT-86 Open concept, Toyota says it “previews a possible future development of the award-winning GT86 sports coupe” and that its goal is to “gauge the public reaction to the idea of an open-top GT86”. The 86 is called GT86 in Europe and Scion FR-S in America.
Toyota, back on top as the world’s best selling carmaker, added that “testing of a prototype version of the car is already underway,” which means that if the Geneva outing garners positive response, we won’t have to wait too long for a production 86 roadster.
It remains to be seen what kind of roof will be fitted on the FT-86 Open concept (metal or fabric) but we can see from this official sketch that it features 2+2 seating. Click here for our review of the Toyota 86.

As much as I like the 86, this really beats the point. Unless they can get the chasis to be really regit, I don’t see how it can be as fun as the 86. Add to that the boxer-4 does not really have a good engine note or the ride is particularly creamy, which is the main reason most ppl buy a convertible.
Stick to the normal manual coupe if you want a great in-yer-face smile or if you still want an open top, a Mazda MX5. Toyota, just make a more powerful version already.
Still love the sound of inline 4 VTEC in S2000.
The only thing I hate about the S2000 is the resale value, waited 5 years only to come down 40k …….sigh, I really want one. It’s still has a reputation for its high reliability, even at that high revving engine.
i find virtually almost any of the special honda’s to have great resale value. dc5 integra type-r, still above 100k for a good one. fd2r civic type r vs a similarly priced when new golf gti of the same year, civic type r still goes for around 140k while its only 100k for a gti.
come on come on.. RM220k.. oh baby.
According to scientific facts, taking the roof off reduce the stiffness of the car by 30 percent. The engineers add more stiffness toward the floor thus add more weight to the car.
More weight = less output power. Power to weight ratio.
450k, expected, learning from history.
kinda weird looking if 86gt become roadster
kinda great marketing point to have convertible….but also kinda ruining the 86 legendary status
The FT-86 drop top, coming soon to a college campus sorority house near you…
