SPYSHOTS: Hardcore Audi R8 prototype spotted

The Audi R8 has been with us for close to eight years already and though it may be on its way out, it’s not looking to go quietly from the looks of these spyshots. A camouflaged prototype of the current R8 has been spotted in Europe, hinting at an even higher-performing variant.

Perhaps Audi engineers are working on a swan song version to send off the current model before introducing the new one in the near future. The rim design and the overall design of the front grille for this prototype seem to echo the Audi R8 Plus that is on sale now.

What stands out is the aero add-ons that are rather extravagant. A huge, fixed rear wing protrudes out from the bodywork while upon closer inspection, there seems to be a slightly redesigned rear diffuser. All of this will no doubt add to the aerodynamic performance of the car.

Another interesting bit is the possible sighting of what looks like part of the bracing of a roll cage in one of the shots. Should the production version come with a similar setup, expect the car’s interior to feature more go-faster bits like lighter seats and such.

The last time Audi presented the R8 in a similar fashion, it was the Audi R8 GT that was touted as one of the most extreme variants. With the facelifted R8, the highest performing variant available is the limited edition Audi R8 LMX.
