Honda Malaysia recalls 87,182 vehicles over Takata airbag issue – City, Civic, CR-V, Jazz, Stream affected

honda_cr-v

Honda Malaysia has announced a “precautionary update” for 87,182 units of Honda vehicles in the country over the ongoing Takata airbag issue, and the move involves the following models: 2003-2008 Honda City, 2003-2008 Honda Civic, 2002-2007 Honda CR-V, 2004-2006 Honda Jazz and 2004-2005 Honda Stream.

The recall exercise follows the recent announcement made by Honda Motor Co issuing a global recall on 4.9 million vehicles over faulty Takata airbags, and will see the replacement of the Takata-made driver and passenger airbag inflators with newly-produced inflators on all the affected models.

In issuing that global recall last week, the automaker said that it would announce regional recalls locally – the Malaysian recall follows on that issued by Honda Australia yesterday involving a total of 130,000 vehicles.

Last November, Honda Malaysia recalled a total of 15,734 vehicles, comprising 15,612 units of the Honda City and an additional 122 units of the fully-imported Honda Jazz. Earlier on, in June 2014, a separate recall required the 2001-2003 Honda Stream, 2002-2003 Honda Jazz, 2003 Honda City and 2003 Honda Accord models to be brought in over potential passenger airbag defects.

Honda Malaysia says the latest round of its “precautionary measures” do not affect its current selling models, and adds it deeply regrets the inconvenience caused to all affected customers. The company will be informing all customers involved via notification letters, which will include details of the product update.

Customers who receive these letters are advised to send their vehicles to the nearest authorized Honda dealer for inspection. The replacement works will be carried out once the parts are ready, and all costs of parts and labour will be borne by Honda Malaysia.

Honda Malaysia continues to urge owners of Honda vehicles affected for the product updates to get their vehicles checked and parts replaced at any authorised Honda dealers as soon as possible. Vehicle owners can check their vehicle’s product update status by calling Honda’s Toll Free number at 1-800-88-2020 or visit any authorised Honda dealer.

Japanese companies willing to spend huge money to ensure best quality, even for a 10 years old car.

Ask yourself a simple question: Does Hyundai/Kia, Proton, VW, Ford care about the car sold 10 years ago?

This is stupid though, for a lifesaving device, you have to wait? Why not get some other supplier?

do you know why they’re doing this recall? there were cases of people around the world being killed by debris from the takata made airbags when it deployed. One of those who died was a pregnant woman in east malaysia just last november.

  • Six fatalities in Honda cars, including five in the U.S. and one in Malaysia, have been blamed on shrapnel from Takata air bags. At least 105 injuries are connected to the flaw, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson said last month.

So where are the proponents of “more airbags in our car please, because its a safety thing”?
Ask them to volunteer to help deal with safety crisis like this or help design a production SOP to prevent crisis like these from happening in the future please

Lots more people saved by airbags. Takata airbags had manufacturing flaw causing the injury/death, hence the recall to avoid further litigation. All new cars should have SRS airbags for front and back passengers, and all must wear 3 points safety belts too for maximum safety. No doubt there is still a chance of dying/drowning if you crash into water, but safety features are there for protection most of the time. Don’t let this event mislead people into thinking airbags are unnecessary.
