Volvo teases “time machine” concept for Los Angeles

Volvo Time Machine Concept Dashboard Tease

Today is Back to the Future Day and several carmakers, including Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Lexus, have paid homage to the iconic movie trilogy with a series of promotional videos.

Volvo however, did not prepare something for the occasion and instead, issued a statement that has some relevance to time travel. The Swedish carmaker has announced that at the Los Angeles Auto Show, it will display a concept “time machine.”

This future concept is said to be compatible with the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which underpins the new XC90 and 14 future models over the next three years.

Developed by the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Centre in Camarillo, California over the last several years, the “time machine” concept will feature new hardware and software to showcase the future of personal mobility.

Don’t get your hopes up for a Swedish DeLorean, though, as Anders Tylman-Mikiewicz, general manager of the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Centre stated that, “you won’t be able to go back in time and meet the legends of history, or go into the future and meet your kids, but when our planned concept is applied to a SPA based vehicle, it has the potential of giving significant time back to drivers.”

This could very well be Volvo hinting at an autonomous driving system, previously previewed by the Intellisafe Auto Pilot function. The system is expected to feature on several XC90 SUVs in a project titled “Drive Me.”
