R35 Nissan GT-R to go for premium luxury market

The R35 Nissan GT-R is poised to move into a more luxurious market position, according to GT-R programme manager Hiroshi Tamura. He said the current GT-R still has some targets to achieve, which indicates there might not be major changes to the 2016 model, performance wise.

In an interview with Top Gear, Tamura said, “let’s get to the more simple question – when is the next GT-R coming? Not yet, because I want to hit some of the other objectives first.” Nissan apparently plans to improve on the GT-R’s creature comforts, including a premium leather interior and high-end sound system.

“I want to make the GT-R more premiere. Not just fancy, but real premium. Quality,” he said. “Handling quality, ride and comfort quality, NVH quality, some high quality in the body construction. We still have big opportunities here.”

Nissan isn’t saying when the changes will be implemented, but Tamura hinted the GT-R Egoist is a good preview of what is to come. “The next-GT-R is not so near from here. First, I want to show more sophistication in this GT-R,” said Tamura.

Does this mean that an “RS” badged GT-R is out of the question? “Fifty years ago, 200 hp was a top sports car. Then 300 hp. Now 600 hp is commonplace in super sports. Something beyond that is huge energy to control,” said Tamura. “I don’t want to say anything about the reality of an ‘RS’, because the customer expectation might be 800 hp or 900 hp.

“Is that OK for my philosophy on confident driving? Not just safety, but a stable feeling when you hit the gas? That connection is important to me. That’s why for an RS, it’s not so easy,” he said.

I love this R35 GTR, but there have been downside of owning it coz there not much improvement especially the interior over the years.Even though the price diff between the 1st R35 till the latest facelift are very big.
But I appreciate how Nissan put on their RnD on its performance. Its an art of performance car.
Nowadays lots & lots more supercar started using 4wd instead of RWD

This I don’t get. That’s greed talking there.

Did Nissan conveniently forget they still had the Skyline brand? or is that not premium enough? Their new Infiniti Q60 Coupe would take the VR38 and GTR drivetrain just as well.

Maybe I’m not the target market, but having had a short drive in one, my thought never veered into …”this isn’t luxurious enough”… what I remembered was the brutality of the pull, the immediacy of the turbochargers, and also the thought that the car sounded too quiet. Too civilized. Too NSX’ish. There is no baritone V8 or Flat 6 bark…. nor the soundtrack of a high revving italian V8 or V12.

The makings of a legend does not come in the form of luxury, comfort, ride and NVH. Unless of course, you are Rolls Royce.

Did Nissan forget that the entire 90s sports car segment came into a grinding halt, when they wanted to make them more luxurious? History repeats itself?

although technically still brilliant and technologically relevant , i feel the GTR is abit long in the tooth considering the rush of new models and significant facelifts its competitors are getting…
and i can say , its probably the only one from that elite group of super cars that u cannot practically use everyday no matter what nissan tells u , spine shattering ride , and a grumbling gearbox in everyday drive is almost unbearable…
