Perodua, Petronas ink RM355m engine oil deal, product to be available outside of P2 workshops

Perodua Petronas 2

Perodua has inked a RM355 million deal with Petronas Lubricants for the latter to supply 17 million litres of engine oil to the carmaker. The volume is an increase of 21% over the previous Perodua-Petronas contract, and is for a period of five years.

Perodua and Petronas have an existing engine oil partnership that has been in place since 2003. “Our partnership with Petronas has been very fruitful as they offer one of the best engine lubricants both domestically and globally,” said Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd MD Dr. Zahari Husin.

The contract renewal ceremony at Perodua Sentral this morning also saw the launch of a higher grade engine oil (API SM, from SL) that will not only be available at Perodua service centres, but also at independent workshops and retail outlets. This is to capture the out-of-warranty Perodua owners who no longer bring their cars back to official service centres.

“We realise that some of our post-warranty customers have moved on to service their own vehicles. That being said, we have invested a lot of resources to improve our operations and we hope that they will give Perodua another chance,” Zahari added.

Perodua says that the new engine oil, which will be on sale from September, is designed with improved oxidation resistance, higher protection against carbon deposits, better wear protection and increased performance over the oil service life, which is 10,000 km or six months.

The Rawang-based carmaker explained that the product isn’t merely a rebranded off-the-shelf Petronas Syntium engine oil, but is designed to Daihatsu Motor Corp’s standards, formulated by Petronas. Pricing of the semi-synthetic oil will be announced at a later date.

“The product is not MERELY rebranded Syntium but designed to meet Daihatsu standards. On the Syntium site its stated that poor MERE Syntium was designed “to the strictest standards as partner of F1 AMG Mercedes team.” Hmmm. Which standard Is higher, Mercedes or Daihatsu?

They are definitely selling inferior engine oil. Since last year, there are so many API SN rated oil in the market. Now only Perodua want to sell API SM ???

RM355 million for 17 million litres means cost to Perodua is about RM83 per 4L bottle. The above pic shows it is semi-synthetic and not even latest SN API rated. What is an attractive price to sell if they need to sell to 420,000 Perodua owners every year for 5 years assuming they change oil twice a year.

Perodua can ink all the big contracts and deals but their cars until today still got no VSC and ABS.

ABS was made compulsory in Europe in the 90s and VSC was made compulsory in Europe in 2005.

Driving a car without ABS or VSC is like driving a car without seat belts and without a windscreen. You are just signing your death warrant.

Please Perodua, no point signing all the deals in the world when even basic safety also your cars don’t have

That is not true. Perodua engine always noisy regardless of oil. It’s the engine design especially on the ancillary components such as the beltings. You are not Otai after all. Especially on car matters.

Perodua, why don’t you ink deal with the supplier of ABS and VSC for your cars? that is much better than Petronas oil.

ABS and VSC save lives. Petronas oil cannot save lives.

Folks – read about how the latest API SN oils (which is widely available even in your local hypermarket) provide a different level of oxidization protection and fuel consumption compared to the much older API SL and API SM oil. New API standards go in alphabetical order. Be smart about this – it can be better for the environment (reduced emissions) and for your wallet (better engine protection and FC).

    • I actually witness a case whereby a myvi’s battery water was left remaining 5mm only, and the reason this ahlian told me was; since P2 has toyota reliability and quality, why need to change/replace anything? The car clocked 30,000km w/o a single service recorded.

There was also another case of this Ah Lian wanted to unscrew her radiator cap while the car engine was running hot. Luckily I stopped her. If not….tragedy.
