Open for booking from earlier this month following its sighting on the road before that, the all-new Toyota Innova has been spotted on a trailer here undisguised, between a Vios and a Fortuner. Unveiled last year in Indonesia, the second-generation Innova will soon make its way to Malaysia in three guises, the 2.0E MT, 2.0E AT and 2.0G AT at RM109k, RM117k and RM126k respectively.

Motive power is courtesy of the 1TR-FE 2.0 litre petrol engine, now with Dual VVT-i and rated at 139 PS at 5,600 rpm and 183 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The base E variant gets a five-speed manual, while the rest employ a new six-speed automatic, sending drive to the rear wheels.

Inside, an integrated head unit with USB, Bluetooth and six speakers are standard across the board, while there is the option to go for the DVD-AVX (RM2,968) or DVD-AVN (RM3,816), an eight-inch touchscreen head unit with smartphone connectivity, HDMI input and reverse camera; the AVN adds navigation, while a digital video recorder can be had for RM636.

On the safety front, the new Innova gets a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating, although this is limited to the ESC-equipped 2.0G variant, with seven airbags (two each for front, side, and curtain, plus driver’s knees), brake assist, hill start assist and emergency stop signal. The rest of the range receive four stars, equipped with three airbags and ABS. Not long now till we get full access to the new model. Stay tuned to paultan.org for more.

Hi PT, a salesman friend of mine told me that the 2.0E variant is actually getting VSC as well. But 7 airbags is reserved for the 2.0G. Hehe.

I think all with VSC and 7 airbags. Toyota is covering for lack of safety.

    • My eyes were more drawn to that white Sienta. Man, the Sienta is ugly. I reckon if not for huge discounts, UMW won’t be selling any of those.

Boo! This car is not fit for 2018. Those buy 2.0E now will regret later in 2018 when they ‘supposedly’ need to add VSC.

If u need to carry 8 ppl, its either innova or u need 2 proton preve (both c segment). So do the maths which is more economical.

    • The new Innova is heavier by more than 100 kg compared to the current one and the engine still have the same output. Same power + heavier body = worse fuel economy. Toyota fanboys will argue the 6 AT improves fuel economy, but in reality it is still not enough to compensate for the extra weight.

At least the auto gets 6 ratios with dual VVTi. The G model gets a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating with seven airbags, VSC/ESC, brake assist, hill start assist & emergency stop signal.

Not shabby considering its only RM126k that can seat 8 people.Together with an integrated head unit with USB, Bluetooth & six speakers as standard across the board, where else U can buy a 8 seater for that price & the safety.

Now with dual vvti and new 6 speed AT. Wow..Very impressed ! German and continental car manufacturers have long used turbocharged direct injection, minimum 6 speeder auto/dual clutch. Base variant only 3airbags and no VSC? Gone is the Toyota era. People are switching to Honda or other continental cars now.
