Honda WR-V – ‘Jazz SUV’ launching in India this week

The Honda WR-V will make its official debut in India this week, and a microsite has been set up for the new model, indicating that the Jazz-based crossover will be launched on Thursday, March 16. The car was first seen in Brazil late last year.

The “Winsome Runabout Vehicle” is clearly based on the Jazz, but it has been given butch SUV-inspired looks that are in fashion today. The treatment includes a unique face that follows the HR-V and black plastic cladding all around the lower part of the body, including the wheelarches. There are silver bits on the front and rear bumper to mimic sump guards, plus roof rails.

Besides the unchanged basic shape, the Jazz’s signature line on the profile and tail lamps remain; although the latter gets an extension that sits inside the tailgate, which has rearranged elements. The Brazil-spec WR-V has a high 207 mm running height and good angles of approach and departure, at 21 and 33 degrees respectively.

It’s essentially the same formula Honda used to differentiate the BR-V from the Mobilio MPV. Like the seven-seater that we’ve just tested, the WR-V rolls on two-tone 16-inch wheels.

In India, the WR-V will rival the Ford EcoSport and Hyundai i20 Active; the latter is also a jacked-up B-segment hatch. There, the WR-V will carry over the Jazz’s engine options, which includes a 1.2 litre i-VTEC petrol engine and a 1.5 litre i-DTEC diesel motor. There’s no CVT option though – both come with manual transmissions, five speeds for the petrol and six for the oil burner.

With an automatic ‘box, will this do well in ASEAN, or will it be one V too many?
