VIDEO: 2018 Audi A8 previews remote parking pilot

The 2018 D5 Audi A8 will make its global debut at the Audi Summit on July 11 in Barcelona. Ahead of the event, the German carmaker has begun teasing some of the features that will be available on its flagship sedan.

In the video, we see a father driving his sleeping son home before parking the D5 A8 outside the house’s garage. He then proceeds to carry his kid into their home, and with a push of a button on the key fob, the A8 manages to reverse park itself into the house’s garage.

This is meant to demonstrate the sedan’s ability to remotely park itself (dubbed Audi AI remote parking pilot), all without requiring a human behind the wheel or fiddling with a smartphone app (or key fob). It has been reported that the new A8 will arrive with Level 3 autonomy, which will enable the car to take full control of driving duties.

In certain shots, we also get to see some of the new A8’s exterior and interior styling cues. The former includes the latest interpretation of the Singleframe grille, what appears to be Matrix LED headlights and a continuous taillight design (like on the prologue concept).

As for the interior, there’s plenty of premium trim and leather on show, accompanied by kit such as the Audi virtual cockpit and rear infotainment system. A new steering wheel is also shown here, which appears nearly identical to the one in the prologue concept.

Previously, Audi gave us other insights into the A8, including the multi-material Audi Space Frame (ASF) that underpins it. The frame not only provides optimum rigidity and strength, it also helps contribute to a more spacious cabin (28 mm more knee room and 14 mm more headroom).

A 48-volt mild hybrid system will be part of the A8’s powertrain, which features an advanced stop-start system that uses a suite of sensors to assess different traffic situations. It will also allow the sedan to coast with its engine switched off at speeds between 55 km/h and 160 km/h, sustainable for up to 40 seconds.

If you’re wondering why the kid is dressed in Spiderman overalls, this is meant to correlate with the new A8 making its appearance in the upcoming Marvel film Spider-Man: Homecoming (in Malaysia July 6).

That’s a very nice house. Can’t see much of the car except for the steering wheel. The current A8 is uninspiring from the outside. Prefer the old A8/S8 that Jason Statham drove in The Transporter. Now that is a proper sleeper car.
