New Toyota Yaris Ativ launching in Thailand next week – refreshed Vios in 1.2L Eco Car spec, 7 airbags

Toyota will be launching the new Toyota Yaris Ativ sedan in Thailand next week, August 15. The Thai market leader has released an official teaser video of the Yaris Ativ, but Headlightmag has gone one step further with leaked brochure images of the new model, showing the car in full.

The Yaris Ativ will be one of the biggest launches in Thailand this year, it being a new Toyota and also an affordable Eco Car. It’s based on the current Vios (Thai facelift revealed in January), but with a new name, fresh design, and an engine downsized to comply with Thailand’s Eco Car rules, which has a 1.2 litre engine capacity limit.

Currently, the Yaris hatchback is an Eco Car with a 1.2 litre engine, while the Vios comes with a 1.5 litre engine, like in Malaysia. The Yaris Ativ will be Toyota’s first sedan Eco Car and will be an alternative to the Honda Brio Amaze, Mitsubishi Attrage and Suzuki Ciaz. The refreshed Yaris hatchback will join the Ativ very shortly in the Land of Smiles.

The Yaris Ativ will be powered by a 1.2 litre Dual VVT-i four-cylinder engine paired to a CVT automatic transmission, but there could be performance and efficiency improvements over the current 86 PS/108 Nm 3NR-FE used in the Yaris hatch. The Ativ boasts a good set of safety kit for an Eco Car – seven airbags, VSC and hill start assist will be available.

The redesign is comprehensive, and the Yaris Ativ appears to not only have unique front and rear ends, but a unique profile as well. The shoulder line rises to the tail, and the glasshouse appears slimmer as a result. There’s a distinct character line that starts from the front wheel arch, heading towards the C pillars. There’s another line that traces the door handles.

The Yaris Ativ face is dominated by a large lower grille with LED daytime running lights at each top end. It’s paired with a typically Toyota V headlamp and grille combo. The rear sports long, wraparound tail lamps. What do you think of this new look for the Vios?

  • In Thailand, this car is placed below Vios to compete with Almera and Attrage, therefore it supposedly sit in the cheaper price bracket of RM65k to RM75k. But, doubtful it come here as it will be too near Perodua and Proton pricing (if you look from the point of 9 year loan). And without the Bukit Raja assembly line up and running, it most probably won’t come anytime soon.
