The realm of the four-door coupe gets ever bigger, and now the BMW 2 Series has joined the fray with the sighting of a new variant, the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The upcoming 2 Series Gran Coupe is said to be based upon the next-generation 2 Series chassis, and has been tipped to bear the F44 model code.
This suggests that the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be built on a transverse engine platform, which means front-wheel drive with the option of xDrive all-wheel drive, as the company aims to distance the upcoming model from the positioning of the 3 Series – it will thus slot in between that car and the China-only 1 Series Sedan.
Powertrain options are expected to mirror those in current BMW models, namely a selection of petrol and diesel engines in three- and four-cylinder configurations. If typical BMW form is followed, there will be no six-cylinder option for transverse-engined models, and of course, manual and automatic transmissions can be expected.
Given its proximity to the 1 Series Sedan, the 2 Series Gran Coupe could be a global model. The 1 Series Sedan which is positioned below it is China-only for now, though it has been said to be under consideration for the Australian and US markets as well. Between the Bavarian duo, these will go head to head with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA, A-Class sedan, and the Audi A3 sedan.
