Australia’s best-selling vehicle, the Toyota Hilux, has just been updated with the introduction of three new models, slated to go on sale in the second quarter of this year. Based on the facelifted pick-up that was unveiled last November, Toyota says all three – Hilux Rogue, Rugged and Rugged X – feature dramatic 4×4 styling that boost off-road protection, recovery and functionality.
The Rugged X is now the new range-topper that will be positioned above the SR5, which is currently the top model, followed by the Hilux TRD. The Rugged X gets a high-tensile alloy bash plate and a winch-compatible hoopless steel bull bar, both of which are designed to work with the pick-up’s airbags and other factory-fitted safety systems.
Aesthetically, the Rugged X sports a new black grille with a honeycomb design and gloss-black surround. As implied by the name, it will also be equipped with a snorkel, high-powered LED driving lights built into the centre of the lower bumper, high-strength front and rear recovery points, rock rails, a load-carrying sports bar and other heavy-duty components.
Next up is the Hilux Rugged. Essentially a milder version of the X, it gets the same off-road look without all the heavy-duty equipment. Notable features include the unique front-end design with a premium steel bull bar. Both the Rugged X and Rugged share the same dual-tone six-spoke alloy wheel design, although the latter settles for halogen reflectors with LED DRLs built into the edges of the bumper.
Last but not least, the Hilux Rogue. This variant also sits above the SR5 (but below the Rugged X) and looks a lot less utilitarian than the Rugged X. Features include a sleek new fascia that’s accentuated by the gloss black grille with grey surrounds, whereas the powerful stance comes courtesy of the all-black alloy wheels, which it shares with the Hilux TRD.
With the Rogue, items such as the wing mirror caps, door handles and Hilux badges are finished in black. Rounding off the exterior kit is “Rogue” branded sports bar and LED headlamps.
Toyota Australia’s vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the new models will add a bold, aspirational attitude to the quintessential Hilux attributes of being tough, strong and unbreakable.
“Hilux buyers increasingly demand additional features – in fact, they spend more on accessories than any other vehicle in our range,” said Hanley. “These new vehicles will enable them to make a statement with advanced toughness, added capability, practical comfort, first-class safety and the in-built strength that makes Hilux the indisputable number one,” he added.
“Hilux Rugged X is a no-compromise vehicle for those seeking adventure with a robust and capable vehicle that makes the ultimate statement: work hard, play harder. Hilux Rogue is for people who want refinement and capability, enabling them to go for weekend adventures and do it in style. Hilux Rugged is about toughness and off-road performance – an ideal vehicle for getting off the beaten track,” Hanley explained.
According to Hanley, each of the new component will be fully integrated with the vehicle and will be certified by the Australian Design Rules to be fully homologated. This means the trio will receive full warranty coverage as per the rest of the Hilux range. He also said each of the three have been rigorously developed to meet Toyota’s renowned vehicle standards and were optimised for performance, durability and mass. Pricing and further details will be revealed at a later date.

Pls do tell us the price. We are eager to know the Australian price. My bro just bought a Camry Hybrid in Sydney for AUD27k. That is hardly RM90k.
Come to Malaysia, despite having tax free status for EV/ Hybrid, gomen owned UMW sells for RM175k
I wonder how cheap this Hilux will be in Australia!
UMW must reduce their hardcore pricing. Hah3
Not everything is cheap in Australia. Go find out how much a Hilux cost in Australia and u will be perplexed
Pfft! No front bullbar plus winch and they call it hardcore? Which Aussie’s gonna be fooled by that?
