Honda Civic hatch previewed with Mugen bodykit, rims

Along with the Mugen RC20GT Civic Type R Concept based upon the FK8 Civic Type R, Mugen has also brought a regular Honda Civic hatchback to the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon. This kitted-out Mugen Civic Hatchback is billed as a prototype, so this isn’t the confirmed catalogue, rather a glimpse of things to come.

That said, there are design flourishes which still distinguish this Mugen-kitted example from even the halo car it is meant to share visual cues with. Up front, a carbon-fibre iteration of the ‘Solid Wing Face’ grille trim, front bumper leading edge and lower lip extensions feature, with the latter two painted to match the body.

So too are the side skirts, while the rear end receives a pair of centrally mounted exhaust outlets (the standard hatchback, like the sedan on sale in Malaysia, has no visible outlets), with a longer, roof-mounted spoiler. Meanwhile, the Mugen Civic’s wheels are identical to those on the RC20GT, albeit measuring 19 inches in diameter, and Mugen’s recommended tyre size for this is 235/35R19.

The Civic interior gets the Mugen touch, too, though nowhere as audacious as that within the RC20GT concept with its squared-off, race car-like helm. There’s a new starter button, sports floor mats and scuff plates, while remaining mostly similar to the base production car’s interior.

Many a Honda Civic in Malaysia have been kitted out with Mugen bodykit replicas, particularly the FD-series cars. A harbinger of future, similarly kitted tenth-generation Civic sedans set to ply our roads perhaps? While this is a preview of what’s possible with the hatchback, perhaps there might be a version for the sedan, too. What do you think of this kit, dear readers?
