FIRST DRIVE: Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 TSI Highline

First launched in Malaysia back in April 2017, the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan is an interesting alternative to the usual SUV offerings like the Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail and Mazda CX-5. Customers will get to choose two variants – Comfortline and Highline – both powered by a 1.4 litre TSI engine.

The single-turbo mill serves up 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, which is directed to the front wheels via a six-speed DSG wet dual-clutch automatic gearbox. While the base Comfortline sells for RM148,990 on the road without insurance, the range-topping Highline, which is the tester we have for this video, is priced at RM168,990.

The Highline comes equipped with LED headlamps with Dynamic Cornering Assist, 18-inch “Kingston” wheels (shod with 235/55 tyres), “Vienna” combination leather interior, three-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch Active Info Display digital instrument panel and a Discover Media eight-inch touchscreen system.

So, does the overall package impress? Well, join us as we take you on a tour of the Tiguan Highline and find out what we think of the SUV. For a more detailed look at equipment and specifications of the Tiguan range, head on over to CarBase.my.

This is such a good car. Just pity Proton rejected VW’s offer to merge many times. Otherwise, we will be having this as Proton Tiguan.

Mind you, the Tiguan is actually the RM500k Porsche Macan and RM350k Audi Q5

What a waste. Now we are stuck with China cars.

You should say the Tiguan is not as good as the Myvi, with its reliable Vios engine. That is more in-character than suddenly supporting VW. Oh, stop with the self-liking your own comments. It is too obvious and just make you look plain foolish.

Tiguan is sold in 200 countries worlwide, including USA and Europe.

That itself should prove how good the car is.

If a car cannot sell globally, that means the car is kaput

Does it impress? Only in the driving and interior quality department but that alone isn’t enough to attract customers from the Japanese rivals. There isn’t enough value added kit.

It is a stupid decision. The handling & safety is no more close Tiguan. Its chassis has not upgrade for a long time with very low torsion twist. Also Toyota is famous for its old tech engine that date back to 40 years and still using ……that is why you get a reliable engine that seldom breakdown but damn polluting and less fuel efficient. Don’t u think it is stupid to pay premium for a expired item ?

What it Really lack is a 2.0 turbo engine like the Passat.

  • Thanks Matt for summarizing.. Tiguan rank way below in the SUV class for it’s price.. it really lack the safety features compare to it’s competitor, lack of power and yet it’s so pricy.. no wonder there are so many new CRV and new CX5 on the road and barely see any new Tiguan..

Have you noticed the steering wheel position is way off the seating position? It’s very “un-volkswagen” with such a flaw…

    • There’s a lever where you can actually adjust the position of the steering wheel…

Value for money. With almost same price with a Japanese SUV and yet you get the continental feel (driving) and safety. the safety we talk about here is basic fundamental Chassis rigidity that result in better control, road handling and drive comfort which directly or indirect reduce the risk of accident. In this regard, the only Japanese SUV that is close to have this character is CX5. Honda is total out.
