GIIAS 2018: Nissan Terra – Navara-based 7-seat SUV

The Nissan Terra has made its Indonesian debut at the 2018 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). Indonesia is the second market in ASEAN to see the Terra surface after the Philippines.

First seen in February in China, the Terra is a three-row, seven-seat SUV based on the Navara NP300 pick-up truck. It’s Nissan’s belated entry into the one-tonne truck-based SUV market which already the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X.

Unlike the petrol-powered version sold in China, the Terra destined for ASEAN is be powered by a 2.5 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel that makes 190 hp and 450 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm. The YD25DDTi oil burner with VGT is mated to a seven-speed torque converter automatic transmission with manual mode, or a six-speed manual.

Customers can choose 4×2 or 4×4 versions, the latter with a rear differential lock. The new SUV has a best in class 225 mm ground clearance. Keen to highlight its SUV heritage, Nissan is displaying a Nissan Terrano and Patrol at GIIAS.

Nissan also claims best in segment cabin and cargo space with the Terra, which measures 4,895 mm long and 1,865 mm wide, with a 2,850 mm wheelbase. That’s 100 mm longer and 10 mm wider than the Fortuner, while the wheelbase is 105 mm longer than the Toyota’s – this is a very big car.

The available features list is pretty impressive. One can have a Terra with hill start assist, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, intelligent rear view mirror, intelligent around view monitor with moving object detection, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The second row seats can be folded at a touch of a button from the driver’s seat, allowing easy access to the last row – this is unique in the class.

The Terra will be made for the region in Thailand, where it will be officially launched before the year ends. Nissan says that the SUV will also head to Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam; but unfortunately Malaysia has not been mentioned.

Here, order books are open, with prices starting from Rp 460 juta (RM129,477) for the base 4×2 manual to Rp 670 juta (RM188,536) for the top 4×4 VL AT. Five colours are available, including the hero Earth Brown you see here.

You know why Malaysian is excluded from the release? The countries that Nissan mentioned will import directly from Nissan Thailand. Ours will definitely will have to wait for ETCM to assemble it. If they really want assemble it for our market, then expect at least 2 years late, with only 2 airbags.

Fortuner is short even compared to Isuzu MU-X.

And 3rd row folding side ways just eat ups the width for luggage.
