The new 2019 Toyota Camry has been officially launched by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) at the KL International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2018. The eighth-generation Camry is available in a single 2.5V spec, priced at RM189,900 on-the-road excluding insurance, fully imported from Thailand.
It’s probably the most striking and dynamic looking Camry we’ve ever received, and the new D-segment sedan is being dubbed the “Beautiful Monster” by UMWT. It’s not just the flowing bodywork (reminds me of the new Lexus ES and LS) that’s new though; the new Camry is underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that’s said to improve stability, agility and safety all at once.
The eighth-generation Camry is longer (+35 mm for 4,885 mm), wider (+15 mm for 1,840 mm) and sits lower (-25 mm for 1,445 mm) than the car it replaces. The 2,825 mm wheelbase is 50 mm longer, which means overhangs are now shorter. Styling aside, the proportions brought about by the above dimensions contribute to the more athletic look.
The suspension is made up of front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbones, replacing the previous rear multi-links. A parallel axis EPS system steers 18-inch multi-spoke wheels with 235/45 tyres. This is the first time the Camry is being offered with 18-inch rims in Malaysia – the outgoing XV50 topped out at 17 inches.
What’s largely unchanged is under the hood, where you’ll find the 2AR-FE 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine, carried over from the outgoing Camry along with a six-speed auto. The Dual VVT-i and ACIS-equipped unit makes 184 PS and 235 Nm of torque at 4,100 rpm. That’s 4 PS more than the outgoing rating.
The continued use of the 2AR-FE means that we’re not geting the latest 2.5 litre “Dynamic Force” engine that’s available in Thailand – that motor has 209 PS/250 Nm, and is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Also not here is the Thai market’s hybrid variant, although we expect a 2.0L version to join the range further down the line.
Besides the 18-inch wheels, the new Camry’s exterior kit includes automatic bi-LED projector headlamps with LED turn signals. Also on are LED daytime running lights, fog lamps and rear lights – all lighting are LED, basically. Hydrophilic auto retractable wing mirrors (linked to seat memory), auto wipers and dual exhaust tips are the other niceties.
Inside, UMWT’s flagship sedan is well equipped – standard kit include “smooth leather” seats, eight-way powered front seats (power lumbar and memory for the driver, shoulder switch and collapsible headrest on passenger side), power adjustable steering (linked to seat memory), an eight-inch capacitive touchscreen display with navigation, nine-speaker JBL audio system, a seven-inch colour multi-info display between two Optitron dials, and a 10-inch colour head-up display (HUD).
Also included is an electrochromic rear view mirror, keyless entry and push start, electronic parking brake (with auto brake hold), dual-zone auto air con with rear vents, sun shades (powered for rear screen, manual for rear doors), Qi wireless smartphone charger and digital video recorder a.k.a. dashcam.
For safety, the new Camry comes with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety systems, which include Pre-collision System, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Automatic High Beam. This is in addition to seven airbags (dual front, side, curtain, driver’s knee), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, hill start assist, front/rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Six colours are available, and they are the hero Red Mica, Platinum White Pearl Mica, Silver Metallic, Graphite Metallic and Burning Black CS GF. UMWT’s security and solar film is included. The 2019 Toyota Camry goes for RM189,900 on-the-road excluding insurance, CBU fully imported from Thailand. The warranty is five years with unlimited mileage.
Eating into Mercedes/ BMW pricing territory… eh sai bo?
Jz for that Beautiful Monster. Worth all my tiket, petrol + parking caj heh3.
Toyota is stupid. Without dynamic force engine hw can they increase their sales. After they launch chr I already dissapointed with toyota. They didn’t launch the 1. 2litre turbo ,hw can they do tht.
Accountant simply markup the price to compensate lower forecast volume
Beautiful Giant Catfish Monster
Not to worry Mercedes going up in price too as can be seen with the all new A200 with torsion beam selling at 230k and that has almost no autonomous system in it save for autonomous braking. Next gen C confirm priced waayyyyy higher.
Definition of malaysian or Malaysian uncles taken for a ride by UMW. Exorbitant pricing by umw just like lexus. I am beyond speechless.
Toyota is premium. Toyota Century Royal, Crown, Harrier…
Folks…as long as PNB is the tai kor,a cheaper Toyota from UMW is a just a myth.
Kurusamy is the new chief but the pricing is SUPER DUPER GEMUK…NOT KURUS.
UMW is using premium pricing psychology to dupe hardcore Toyota loyalists. They will endure long term hp loans.Remember, premium pricing do not always mean VALUE FOR MONEY.
Proton = value for money
200k for an effing camry
Solid CBU quality, all the way from Thailand.
Yaa right.. CBU but still using the old engine, why not getting the same engine as in Thailand oso??
Boikot UMW here la…always giving inferior engine specs to Malaysian buyers, look down on us as me have no purchasing power. That “Dynamic Force” engine is the one should offer here like the ES. Typical profit leach!!!
UMWT did it again! by selling Toyo as Lexus price (Harrier, and now Camry), and move the Lexus to BMW/Merc range!
This is even closing in Merc C class price! LOL!
I wonder how long the Toyota tolerate on UMWT before pulling them out…UWT is killing the brand slowly
C class costs 30% more (260k) than this camry. or are you talking about A class ?
actually is pretty well equipped…. just a Toyota for rm190k…..most people will rather buying a kosong 3 series entries
Pay Toyota price for Lexus kualiti. no problem
Pay Lexus prices for Toyota quality problems.
priced just 10k below 318i. wow.
Wow… still 6 speed auto?
RM190k BMW 318i seemed a huge bargain @@
Interior space in the 3er is nothing compared to the Camry though. Fat people will gg in the 3er.
Lol still the same ol powerplant.
Toyota still dreaming is it? Wake up la toyota. In japan thailand indonesia you maybe the king but not here in malaysia!!!! All hail king honda!!!
The new Teana and Accord may costs above RM200k. Japanese cars are premium and expensive. If you wan cheap, get Korean or Proton.
Enough d loh being king in Thai and Indonesia. Their population is ten times ours. Why cares about Malaysian market anyway? Let Honda take it lah.
Again, the UMW tagline: if it ain’t broken, why fix? The carry over engine & gear box…
dem expensive man..
A Mamee Monster
Did umw just signed a death warrant for the new Camry with that price?
Toyota Malaysia is joking right?
First it is not CBU and the engine is the oldish outdated model
Lots of features and safety things missing still dare to sell 190k
Full active safety system and 7 airbags is great and should be expected at this price.
Huge shame they won’t bring the new 200hp engine. Might be a deal breaker to some. If Thailand can do it, then no reason Malaysia can’t.
Wat is the reason for omitting the 2.0 model? Doest make any sense and somemore bring most expensive 2.5 wit OLD ENGINE…i guess when sales bad only they insaf
T.camry @ 200k price point? As i Know Camry is around 140k ~ 170k (non hybrid). That’s a huge increase…
UMW is asking for it the moment they went above the 180k price ceiling for their top spec model although the same could be said for Mazda.
But Mazda 6 is CBU Japan
In US and Australia, the same spec priced starts at USD25k and AUD33k. Or less than RM100k. But here its RM190k for a Camry? Might as well get the BMW 318 luxury ar 200k
Next…. With this kind of price
The quality of Japanese cars these days are better than premium German made like BMW and Audi. Their entry level Camry costs almost the same as the BMW 3 series but of cos the quality is better. Gone are the days where Camry is considered as a mass market car. Its as premium as it is and will be even more premium in the coming years. Expect to pay more in the future to own a Japanese car for its outstanding resale value and of cos its superb quality versus other brands.
Either you are high on weed or you are still dreaming. Cant tell.
U are dreaming
Bmw 3 series is too narrow compare to Camry. My height is 190cm can to imagine it is like torture sitting inside Bmw 3 series or X1 or even C class
Hi. This is CBU or CKD?
It is CBU Thailand
that engine…. this price… mazda showroom address please.
Yes. Follow Toyota USA tagline “if u wanna buy a gud Toyota, go get a Mazda”
Looks good but the price is absolutely rubbish. At RM190k I’d rather get the top of the line CBU Mazda 6. Why does UMW consistently slap premium prices on Toyotas? Isn’t Lexus supposed to be the premium brand?
Lexus is ultra premium. Only rich can afford Lexus. You wan quality product like Toyota, expect to pay more
190k for an old piece of junk…!?
Please vote here everyone
-If you press upvote, it means you are buying new Camry
-If you press downvote, it means you are not buying new Camry
Those who voted, how many can actually afford it?
Afaik on the road most BMW and Merc are used/recond, brand new model also can count by finger. Those model cost only RM80k-120K, could not even afford camry/accord/teana old price at RM160k.
This is Toyota. The world most expensive and valuable brand. Expect to pay more for a top notch branded and quality product. Nothing is cheap for Japanese car. Get used to the fact. If you want cheap, get a Proton
Camry prices can increase but giving ah pek Engine and ah pek transmission as bringing here again. Alamak. Who is going to buy Camry.
RM 190k, don’t bother to give you a strut bar?! Come on!!!
If the new Accord is in there then this fugly monster will have no visitor.
TBH the new Accord is also a fugly monster. Your pick on which is the lesser evil.
Salah salah! If the Nissan Maxima is in there then these fugly monsters Camry n Accord will have no visitors.
i hope the 1.5 accord will be priced below 160k
Are they trying not to sell the Camry here? The price is a bit on the high side. Granted, the market has moved on from sedans to SUVs. And UMWT probably thinks people will fork up the extra RM48k for the base Harrier. But still, there are those who prefer a sedan rather than an SUV.
Sometimes I suspect Toyota purposely give a bad design to Vios, or outsourced the designing for Vios to a Kindergarten.
Hahhahaa crazy UMW. Overdesigned piece of junk. A literal monster on wheels. SMH. What’s with the Zakir Naik pants above ankle?
top up a bit more can get BMW or Merc. worth it to buy meh? brand image not there yet to command almost RM200K car.
Might as well buy the Ranger Raptor for that price, got loads of practicality and offroadability for the same amount of money, this just looks good pulling up to some fancy hotel lobby, otherwise, its just the same uncle car….with an old engine…
Saw the car today @ Mitec, looks sexy
I rather buy Honda civic 2018..
All new Camry with all old engine…
Okay lah, no need to harp on the engine and gearbox. It’s a new platform and a lot more well equipped than before. It’s also aimed at a different kind of customer. I don’t see the price being a problem when it isn’t the most expensive in class either, but it’s definitely the best equipped.
Definitely good looking, a lot sharper and far less uncle than before. I especially love how people say “top up a bit for BMW or Mercedes” when they’re going to be topping up a lot for service and maintenance. Toyota – reliable first, but now better equipped and better handling than ever.
Comes with radio data and GPS-linked clock, but the keyless door handle is still on driver’s side only.
Yes one side smart entry is indeed very stingy and cheapskate. It is not expensive stuff and it is necessary for user convenience.
So many complaint it is at Lexus price territory, come on Lexus is way more expensive than that. Guess most are not even at Camry level yet. But not deniable that without new engine 190K is expensive. 210K with new engine and transmission seems more decent, if Malaysian is willing to pay. But most BMW/Merc on the road are those sub 100K old used or recond model only.
