The W213 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+, as much of a mouthful as it is to pronounce, is dubbed by Anthony Lim as the most versatile AMG ever made to date. It was introduced here in September 2017 for just under RM1 million, and those who want to stand out can opt for the stealthier Edition 1 version.

The latter is exactly what we have on review. Armed with a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, the M178 unit produces 612 PS and a mind-numbing 850 Nm of torque. Paired with an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed sports transmission (featuring a wet start off-clutch in place of the torque converter) and a new AMG Performance 4Matic+ fully variable all-wheel drive system, this executive rocket blitzes to the century mark in 3.4 seconds.

An AMG Dynamic Select drive programme offers four drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), and there’s also a Race mode for track use. If you must know, Race mode provides access to a drift mode function for more adventurous drivers, and when activated the car runs as only in rear-wheel drive guise until the mode is switched off. Elsewhere, the new E 63’s Racestart function has also been reworked and is simpler to operate

If you’re wondering why the Edition 1 looks particularly striking, that’s largely due to the special designo selenite grey magno exterior shade and high-gloss black details for the AMG styling kit. It also gets dressed with a Night package and dynamic stripe decals on the side sill panels, whereas a set of 20-inch cross-spoke forged alloy wheel complete the allure.
